TATA POWER SED – 1st PRIVATE SECTOR COMPANY TO BE AWARDED

MAJOR DEFENCE PRODUCTION ORDER

MULTI-BARREL ROCKET LAUNCHER ( PINAKA ) SYSTEM

The indigenous design and development activity on PINAKA (Multi-barrel Rocket Launcher) finally culminated in Tata Power – Strategic Electronics Division bagging a Production Order on March 29, 2006, from the Ministry of Defence for the supply of one regiment to the Indian Army.

It is for the first time that MoD, Govt of India, has chosen a Private Sector company to participate in the production of a major Weapon System. The supply of one regiment involves 20 Launchers, 8 Command Posts along with Spares, and Special Maintenance Tools / Test Equipment for a three tier Integrated Logistics Support at an aggregate price of Rs 172.4 crores.

IMPORTANT EVENTS AT VARIOUS DIVISIONS

TROMBAY

NEW

·  On 22.03.06, Unit no 4 was carrying 128 MW load and it tripped on Static excitation system converter over temperature protection at 11.42 hrs. Unit was brought back on line in 1 hr. 2 minutes, this is the fastest startup we have achieved for Unit 4 and broken the earlier benchmark of 1 hr. 51 minutes. The efforts of all in achieving the new benchmark are highly appreciated.

DIFFERENT

·  New RescueTender was carried out at fire station. It is equipped with various modern emergency tools and equipments.

BETTER

·  On 21-3-2006, conveyor belt 22 A got cut about a meter along the length. M/s H T Patil and D D Bhosale, Coal Plant Attendants, further investigated and found out the root cause for the failure of conveyor 22A belt, which was due to a MS angle 4 ft in length, stuck between the feeder outlet chute and first carrying roller from tail pulley. This observation eliminated further damage to the belt. Observation and analysis of H T Patil and D D Bhosale is appreciated.

·  Meeting of Mutual Aid Response Group, Chembur, Trombay Industrial Belt was held at TATA Power Trombay on 23.03.2006 to discuss various issues in the industrial area. 15 representatives from various industries attended this meeting.

JOJOBERA

NEW

·  Dry Fog system has been installed in the Secondary Crusher House Area of Conveyor No. 5 in Coal Handling Plant. This has reduced dust emission. The system will be installed in four more areas.

·  Officers of Torrent Power, Ahmedabad visited on March 24th and 25th 2006 to study the functioning of the Division. Figures of operational parameters and processes were shared for comparisons. Torrent power has showed interest to understand standard manning process from Jojobera to optimize on Man/MW ratio.

DIFFERENT

·  In Unit - 3, Turbine stop valve defective limit switch (imported) was replaced by Proximity sensor. This replacement of an imported item has resulted in savings of Rs.2,00,000/- on material cost.

·  Service water line was connected directly to Contact tank inlet. Now DM Plant can be started without starting of raw water pump. This has resulted in saving of auxiliary power of 0.7 MWH per day.

BETTER

·  GRP blades of CT Fan 1D were replaced with FRP blades. This has resulted in 30% saving in auxiliary power of CT fan amounting to a saving of Rs. 1.05 lakh per year.

·  After commissioning of the unit soot blowing was carried out without fuel oil support in Unit # 4 for the first time. 2 KL fuel oil has been saved for every soot blowing operation.

·  Modification of 6.6 kV Unit-Station changeover scheme for Unit-3 has eliminated a potential cause of unplanned unit outage.

·  Coal Handling Plant achieved highest ever unloading of 67 rakes in March 06 against previous best of 50 rakes.

Events & Awards

·  The Division was awarded the Greentech Platinum award for Safety. The award distribution function was held on April 08, 2006 at Hyderabad.

·  6th annual safety day function was held in the Plant on March 04, 2006. The Chief Inspector of Factories was the Chief Guest.

·  Coordination meeting with Tata Steel was held on 24th March. The salient points of discussion were Unit-4 PPA, dates for annual shut down of units and outside sale of power – change in power system configuration to maximize sale, projections for FY 07 and FY 08. Periodicities of load throw off tests, stability of unit -4 equipments, accuracy of generation parameters on SCADA were also discussed. Coal requirements and their sourcing were also discussed. Tata Steel has offered to cater the entire coal requirement of Jojobera by FY 08.

CSR

·  On 31st March 06, Jojobera Division organized a homeopathic medical camp at Chhota Govindpur for the benefit of the residents of the locality. This is the first time that the company has organized a Homeopathic Medical Camp. Over one hundred patients were examined and free homeopathic medicines were distributed to them for various ailments. One of the highlights of this camp was the distribution of “Anti Chicken Pox’ doses to over 150 children .The response was overwhelming and many residents requested for conducting such camps regularly.

·  ‘Donate Blood Save Life’ - A blood donation camp was organized on 25th March 06 in company premises. Both employees and contract workmen donated blood for the noble cause.

SPORTS

·  5th Tata Power Golf Tournament was held on 11th and 12th March 06. More than two hundred golfers participated. Mr. S. Baijal, Deputy General Manager welcomed and cheered the golfers.


T & D

NEW

·  As a part of enhancing business relationship of TPC in Mumbai licensed area, Opinion Leaders’ Meet was conducted on Wednesday, 1st March 2006 at Hotel Tunga International Pvt. Ltd., MIDC, Andheri (E), Mumbai 400 093. The various elite dignitaries like Builders, Consultants, Architects, BMC’s officials and members of Consumers’ Association have attended this meet and interactive session was held wherein the various latest issues of Electricity Act 2003 were discussed. The current issues which are with Regulator and have a direct impact of giving power supply to the consumers were also discussed. The audience expressed their concern over the latest MERC order which has stipulated that Mumbai consumers might have to face the load shedding in the coming summer months and also in future.

DIFFERENT

·  Borivli - BDV oil samples are being filtered and stored after Division employees repaired the old filtration machine. Earlier we used to dispose off oil after BDV test. Saving of oil.

·  Salsette / Transmission - Capacitor banks no. 1 & 4 at Salsette R/S are situated on top of terrace of switchgear building and did not have shield wire protection. Salsette division had proposed the job in their capital budget in FY 06 of 1.5 Lakhs to provide shielding pole with new foundation. Transmission division suggested using the available existing redundant structure, old Microwave tower over the switchgear building, which was not in use. Matter was then referred to civil dept and was concurred to use the Microwave tower. Accordingly it was planned to carry out stringing of 0.2 sq.in. copper conductor as a shield wire from 4-circuit tower of 220kV Salsette Borivli lines to the microwave tower on 19th March 2006. This has enabled Salsette Division to complete the job with minimal expenditure in the FY-06. Work was done departmentally by Salsette Camp crew of Transmission Division.

BETTER

·  T & D - Field check lists book for electrical equipment (popularly known as Black Book by Maint. Engrs.) was reviewed by a CFT and revised version was released by Mr. P. K. Kukde on 11th March 06.

·  Supply Division organized a Residential Customer Meet on 11th March. Various issues were discussed with the residential customers and they were informed about the latest norms laid down by the Regulatory body.

·  Borivli - on 29/3/06 division employees, without the help of manufacturer, attended breaker problem of 110kV Borivli-Malad Line-2. Thus a saving of Rs 10000/- was achieved.

·  Saki: 10 MVAR Cap Bank No. 3 commissioned on bay # 5 of 22kV B S III. Saving of about Rs 2.0 lakhs achieved by avoiding extra cable length, excavation & back filling and joints by shifting 22 KV Taj Sahar Cable from Bay # 5 to bay # 8.

·  Distribution - 22KV cable fault in Marol Fdr#1&2 and other two faults were tested and repaired within 24 hrs and cleared for load service.

Near-miss Occurrences

·  Mankhurd - Mr. A Y Alhat & Mr. M M Mahulkar observed hot spot on 110kV breaker "A" top bus bar connecting flat bolts. They immediately informed control room. The same was attended and saved tripping and further damage. Keen observation Mr. Alhat & Mr. Mahulkar is highly appreciated.

·  Distribution - Cable faults saved (Near Miss) at 20 locations during the month due to intensive Patrolling. Total 121 cable faults (Near Miss) saved during the year 2006.

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

·  Ambernath R/S SCADA: Field wiring connections up to TRU completed, Commissioning in progress as per SCADA group

·  Borivli – Mira Road –1 and 2 cables were test charged. SCADA controls were provided for 33kV Mira Road-1 and Cap-1 breaker and test charged.

·  Vikhroli - Transformer # 1 & 2 LT transformer side motorized GOD installed for improved reliability & better performance.

·  Vikhroli - SCADA field wiring & checking work completed by Vikhroli Maintenance dept as per stretch schedule –10.03.2006 for improved reliability & better performance.

·  Distribution - No. of cable faults reduced from 67 to 55 nos.

·  Distribution - 55Kms of HT cable network added during the year under Network Development Plan.

·  Distribution - Due to proper planning and coordination with MMRDA / MCGM / PWD, Rs.3 Crores saved towards Reinstatement Charges (RI).

RECOGNITION FROM OUTSIDE AGENCIES

·  Chembur - Mr. L. J. Mascarenhas was invited by M/s Voltas Ltd to conduct a workshop on Personal safety & women empowerment, for their women employees at Chinchpokli plant on 07/03/06.

·  Saki - ABB appreciated efficient handling of paper work for regularizing the receipt of 23 Nos. RTU panels received on 28/03/06 evening despite year-end tight schedule.

OTHER EXCELLENCE POINTS

·  Founder’s Day was celebrated in a grand way at Parel and at Salsette R/S, commemorating the unveiling of the bust of the Founder. A piece for Knowledge Sharing for our readers - Parel R/S is the 1st Rec. Stn. commissioned on 11th February 1915 along with Khopoli Gen Stn. and it is mentioned in J N Tata’s biography by MR. R M Lala, that Shri J N Tata had set his foot on the soil of Salsette when he was sailing with his friends around Salsette Island.

·  Parel - Function for unveiling of Founder’s Bust was held at Parel on 3rd March 06 in the presence of Mr. P. K. Kukde and other Senior Management team. Past and present employees with their families participated enthusiastically in making the function a grand success. Module of 110 KV BHEL Breaker prepared departmentally was kept on display and knowledge sharing. The team work of Parel Division in organizing the Bust unveiling function on 3rd March’06 and the hospitality extended to all the guests was well appreciated by one and all.

·  Salsette - Founder’s bust was unveiled at Salsette R/S on 3.3.2006 by Shri. P.K.Kukde.

·  Parel - Appreciation letters were also issued to 13 employees at Parel and Mahalaxmi for exemplary actions like, attending to major problem on 110KV BHEL breaker on Tr. Parel 3 at Parel and 3 CTs / 2 relays were replaced and Tr.2 supply to 22KV bus II was restored after putting in almost 24 hours continuous work.

·  Borivli - Mr. K N Halarnkar and Mr. Semletty were deputed to Parel during 110kV CT repairs, to share their knowledge. The CT was repaired successfully. Appreciation letter was received from Parel for their efforts and valuable knowledge.

·  Borivli - Canopies were provided for 110V DC junction boxes. This would avoid pre-monsoon jobs (like tying of plastic) and improve cycle time. Also this would prevent DC grounds in junction boxes due to water ingress.

·  CCR - ED Mr. P. K. Kukde visited CCR on 28th March 06 to see progress of Distribution Automation system for new consumer network. His appreciation about CCR & DAS mentioned in the visitor’s book: is as follows – “Distribution Management System is the heart of commercial operations. The first phase of remote operations of R/S is completed in short time. Now more challenges are up front viz. connecting computer billing system to energy management system. Once this is done TPC will be the role model in India and possibly internationally. I expect this will be done. I have great expectations from you. God bless you”

CSR

As part of World Health Day on 7th April’06, a glittering function was organized by Health Department of Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation [KDMC] at Kalyan Head office to felicitate Organizations & Individuals who had done excellent work in the field of Family Planning.

The function was presided over by Mr. Pundalik B Mhatre – Mayor of KDMC. Other dignitaries present for the function were, Deputy Mayor – Mr. P R Bhoir, Mr. Ramesh Tare – Chairman Standing Committee, Mr. R D Shinde – Commissioner of KDMC, Dr. S Kamble – Chief Medical Officer KDMC, Dr. Katane – CMO Dombivli

The Tata Power Company – Transmission Division, Kalyan was presented a Certificate of Excellence for Meritorious Service to the Community in the field of Family Planning.

Dr. (Mrs.) P Prabhu, AGM-Medical was also awarded a Certificate of Excellence as a Gynecologist for operating on Patients.

Dr. R Y Bhangle received the above certificates, which were presented by the Mayor of KDMC.

The Dignitaries present appreciated the role of our company in promoting Family Planning activities and thereby promoting National Family Planning Programme.

On 27th, A farewell function for Mr. P K. Kukde, ED (O) was arranged at Community Hall at Khopoli. Mrs Kukde, Mr D A Sathe - GM (Tech), Mr. Ashok Sethi - Chief (Hydro), Mr Sunil Thakur - Vice President, of Tata Hydro Union, all three hydro divisional heads, AGM (LNL), Sr. Manager/ Mgr (Kh), union bearers of all three hydro divisions, employees from three hydros & their families attended the function.
