(a) Possible evidence showing understanding of the Pueblos Mancomunados. /
  • The Mancomunados villages are a union of 8 villages in the Sierra de Norte (Northern ranges) of Oaxaca, Mexico, that exemplify how a community can work together (to offer a unique tourist experience).
  • As communities they share their resources, produce and land.
  • The Mancomunados originate from the Zapoteca people and live at 2000–3000 metres above sea level.
  • Their land contains 100 km of tracks designed for walking, mountain biking, and horse trekking.

(b) Possible evidence showing understanding of how they benefit tourism. /
  • With the help of the eco-tourist company “Expediciones Sierra Norte” established in the villages.
/
  • Tourists visit and are encouraged to help promote the natural heritage, local culture, traditions, customs and learn about the natural environment of the villages.
  • Tourism keeps alive traditions and culture and also benefits the community in a sustainable way.
  • Tourists are attracted to the villages through all the various outdoor activities they offer: hiking, mountain biking and trekking, and spend money participating in these activities.
  • The tourism creates local employment such as guides, tourism operators, accommodation etc in the villages who also bring money into the community.
/
  • To help them survive and conserve the natural environment to a high standard.
  • It is a good way for them to take pride in their culture without affecting the nature of the community.
  • Improves the relationship between the 8 villages because they share things with each other.

(c)Possible evidence showing understanding of the advantages of tourism. /
  • I have a secure job and have given many trips to tourists through the different villages in the Mancomunados.
  • I have learnt to speak a lot of English because many of the tourists come from overseas and this is helpful.
  • I am pleased that I have this job so that I can stay with my family in the Sierra Norte, otherwise I would have to move away to the big city.
  • I am now experienced to take tourists on mountain biking trails, hiking and horse trekking.
  • This job keeps me fit.
/
  • During these treks I teach the tourists about our local customs, how we use and share the land and the importance of maintaining the environment in its current state for future generations, so hopefully they also look after our land as much as we do.
  • I too now realise that tourism can be a positive experience, bringing us together as a community.

(a) Possible evidence showing how Pablo Neruda and Paul José’s understanding of happiness are similar. /
  • Happiness doesn’t come from material goods like what you buy or what you have – the exterior.
  • Rather happiness is internal, it is what you are.
/
  • Material things are separate from general wellbeing.
  • This comes from being grateful for what you have, even little things like being grateful for eating well, a nice stroll.

(b) Possible evidence of advice on how New Zealanders could increase their level of happiness, and how this would improve their lives. /
  • New Zealanders could ensure they are healthy – eating well and exercising.
  • New Zealanders should make sure they are socialising regularly.
  • New Zealanders should aim to be independent with money.
/
  • New Zealanders could ensure they are healthy – eating well and exercising. This might help them to be more at peace with themselves.
  • New Zealanders should make sure they are socialising regularly. This might take their mind off worrying, sadness and feeling bored and be more satisfied with themselves.
  • New Zealanders should aim to be independent with money so that they don’t have to worry immediately about money and can focus on living in the moment and be happier with where they are and their achievements.
/
  • New Zealanders need to take time to enjoy happiness, be in the moment and do this without feeling guilty. They could do this by saying 3 simple things they were grateful for each day.
  • This might make them appreciate what they have and, like the Mexicans, have more positive experiences rather than negative.
  • Although Mexicans have more difficulties in their lives they manage to see the positive in what they are doing and as a result are happier with their lives.

Possible evidence is not limited to these examples.
