NC Geologic History Project

North Carolina has a very rich geologic history beginning around 1.7 billion years ago with the formation of the rocks in the Appalachian Mountains. In your groups you will use the following websites and any other resources that you find to investigate the origins of the important geologic features of NC.

Answer the questions below for each of the following features. Your group will be assigned one of these features that will be used in a presentation to be given to the class on a later date. Please let me know if you have questions.

Important NC Geologic Features:

Appalachian MountainsRiver Basin System

PiedmontFall Line (Fall Zone)

Coastal PlainBarrier Islands

Hill & Valley SystemCoastal Sounds

Questions to Answer:

1. Where in NC is this feature located?

2. When do geologist think this feature was formed? (its place on the geologic time scale and in mya)

3. Why is this feature important to NC?

Presentation Rubric

Each group must answer all three questions in their presentation (one slide/link per question). There must be a fourth slide/link that lists your resources and what each person contributed to the project. There must be at least two images (pictures, diagrams, etc. per slide/link. All information should be clearly presented and relevant to your group’s topic. The following two links are examples of presentations.

100 pointsPresentation is clear and relevant to the assigned topic. There is good flow from one slide/link to the next with all questions

answered. There is music or narration included (if supported by presentation platform). There is a slide/link that lists

resources and contributions of group members. There at least 2 images per slide/link that are relevant to the topic.

90 pointsPresentation is clear and relevant to the assigned topic. There is good flow from one slide/link to the next with 2 of 3

questions answered. There is music or narration included (if supported by presentation platform). There is a slide/link that lists resources and contributions of group members. There at least 2 images per slide/link that are relevant to the topic.

70 pointsPresentation is mostly clear and relevant to the assigned topic. Flow from one slide/link to the next is not very smooth with

only 1 of 3 questions answered. There is no music or narration included. There is not a slide/link that lists resources and contributions of group members or part of this required information is missing (i.e. sources are not listed but group members are.) There are no images or images are not relevant to the topic.

0 pointsLittle to no effort was given to the project. There is no flow between slides/links. It is evident that the information was

plagiarized from the source material.

** Do NOT plagiarize. Be sure to cite your resources. If you’re not sure how to cite material please ask.**
