Title:Strategy Intern

Primary Function:
This role is intended to provide a Māori or Pacific post-graduate student with work experience in a district health board. It is 0.8FTE which is equivalent to 4 full days (negotiable). The role is in the Strategy, Participation and Improvement Team at Auckland DHB. The work includes planning, stakeholder engagement, research and assisting with a variety of project work.
The longer term outcomes of this position are:
  • More Māori and Pacific post graduate level students have experience working within a district health board
  • We increase the cultural competence of the Strategy, Participation and Improvement team.
The position would suit a health sciences graduate who is closely affiliated with Māori and/or Pacific communities. They will also be enrolled in post graduate study which is directly relevant to health. The intern must be eager to bring their academic and cultural skills to projects and other work. They should also be highly motivated to pursue a career in the health sector.
The work will be supervised by the Assistant Director Strategy who will ensure that the intern is involved in rewarding projects and has the opportunity to develop their skills and interests. Any cultural input from the intern will be aligned with the work of the Māori and Pacific Health Gain teams at Auckland DHB.

Help to develop strategy and plans /
  • Work alongside the Assistant Director Strategy to make sure employees understand the Auckland DHB strategy.
  • Help staff understand how the Auckland DHB Strategy supports the New Zealand Health Strategy.
  • Help staff to develop other plans as required.

Help to increase the cultural competence of the team /
  • Work with our Māori team, the Chief Advisor Tikanga and our Treaty partners to support the plan for Māori health gain.
  • Work with the Pacific team to advance the health of Pacific people
  • Identify barriers that may prevent Māori and Pacific from accessing health services or which contribute to health inequity.

Research /
  • Help with survey, patient engagement and other research work that provides an evidence-base to our decisions.
  • Draw on both quantitative and qualitative data to support projects.
  • Write up the results from this work, making it easy for the public to understand.

Other tasks required by the Assistant Director Strategy /
  • Develop good working relationships with the Strategy, Participation and Improvement team, assisting with project work.
  • Perform all tasks that support the wider team.
  • Participate in team events and training.
