You are looking for a regular sized cache placed in a naturally formed parking garage.

When visiting Nature's Garage after a heavy rain, you may want to bring your galoshes and a change of socks and pants, as the garage's management company (Mother Nature) has left this parking garage unpaved and is therefore adversely affected by runoff water.

This is a Cars (the movie) themed cache, starting inventory includes a variety of Cars goodies, such as a lantern/flashlight combo and a mini magna-doodle. FTF prize is an unactivated "Orange Racer" geocoin.

You are looking for a small lock-n-lock near the edge of the forest.

While navigating a route over the various streams in the area, came upon an oasis of grass in the midst of all the swamps, trees and brambles. I guess the well-known saying could be modified for geocaching as "The grass is always greener on the other side of the property line" as this nearby grassy meadow is unfortunately on private property while the cache is on the public swampy bramble side of the line.

Terrain rating is based upon coming from Nature's Garage (UBC Loop #1) (GC111QV); if coming from Bugged Out! (UBC Loop #3) (GC111R0), rating would be a 3. FTF prize is a Starbucks gift card.

A nice hike (if you go the right way) by FallsLake.

This was a gpsthegame cache which I placed on a very hot day during the summer. It's said that only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun, and that's when I placed it the first time. It's about 1 1/2 mile round trip if you go the way I went, but it seems that none of the gpsthegame people did that and had a shorter trek. But it was a lot tougher. It could also be accessed by boat, but that would require special equipment. You can walk to this on a nice trail, or bushwhack. I strongly suggest the trail, if you can find it. Remember that Google Earth can be your friend. I could give parking coordinates, but there are a couple of places that work. If you’re really stuck, let me know and I’ll tell you where I parked. Oh yeah, when I did this in the summer, I kept me feet dry. When I dropped in the Geocaching log, I got water over my boots. Enjoy your hike!

As far as the attributes go, it depends on your approach and the season. Bugs, thorns, etc. could be present. But except for a little creek jumping, this is a nice little hike.

You are looking for a regular sized cache up in the wooded hills overlooking FallsLake.

Cache is located on a hill that not too far away drops off into the lake in one direction and a very steep and narrow ravine in the other, so unless you can navigate hills like you are walking on four hooves, don't attempt to cross that ravine right next to the lake as it is much easier up the hill a ways. The end of that ravine does however provide a potential landing site for those approaching from the water.

Once you have located the hiding place of the cache, you'll be wishing that any potential 4, 6 or 8 legged occupants of the area have made like the name of the cache, and Bugged Out of the area before you jam a hand into a dark hole and start fishing around! This is an insect themed cache, starting inventory includes a talking bug-identification magnifying glass, a variety of bugs and bug field guide books. Terrain rating is based upon coming from either Grass is Greener (UBC Loop #2) (GC111QY) or Bar-B-Tree (UBC Loop #4) (GC111R1), rating would be a 2.5 if coming from the nearby Peed-Dead End Road. FTF prize is an unactivated travel bug tag.

Caution: Please be careful removing the cache from the hiding place, which may be challenging for the vertically challenged to extract. If you open the "door" to gain access to the cache, please close when done.

You are seeking a small lock-n-lock in a section of forest that experienced a brush-fire in the recent past.

A number of acres of forest around the cache site are blackened, bordered by the abandoned section of Peed-Dead Rd on one side and what appears to be a fire-break road bulldozed on the other sides. Following either of these roads down to the waterfront will provide you with a great view of this remote section of the lake that is hidden from the Six Forks Rd view by a bend in the lake that makes it appear that the lake ends well before it actually does end.

Terrain rating is based upon coming from Bugged Out! (UBC Loop #3) (GC111R0), rating would be 2.5 if coming from the nearby Peed-Dead End Road; if coming from Over the River (UBC Loop #5) (GC111R2), rating would be a 4. FTF prize is a Starbucks gift card.

You've just won a New Car!

Sometimes when we are geocaching we cross the invisible lines that artificially define and divide our world. This is the fifth of a series of Geocaches dedicated to these kinds of Boundaries.

The cache is small 'sample' container with enough room for a NEW CAR! FTF gets a new Porsche Cayenne and a can of gasoline. But this is not a give-away car lot... YOU MUST BRING A TRADE-IN! Matchbox is accepted (new, no packaging). Tonka is too big. If your car won't fit in the cache, then PLEASE, PLEASE do not take the car already in the cache. Leave it for someone else who may want a trade in.

Speaking of parking -- check the parking waypoint for the best place to park. There's room for about 2 cars here and you should stick to the trail (or the boundary) and obey all the no-trespassing signs! The boundary (once you find it) is clearly marked with orange blazes. DO NOT SEARCH ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!

Speaking of Orange -- this is on NC Gameland property, so hunting is allowed here. Check the NCWildlife.org site to determine the hunting season dates and always wear orange yourself to be visible to hunters. Or you could just save this one for Sunday when hunting is (still) banned in NC.

The hike distance from the parking is less than 0.1 miles -- Follow the Boundary!

This cache is located near Barton's Creek and Falls lake in Wake county. This is a multi-stage cache, with a single control point and a primary Cache.

The listed coordinates lead to the control point. There you will find an aluminum tag with the coordinates of the primary cache.

The location of the cache is not traveled often. The difficulty of the terrain will vary with the seasons. It is easiest to traverse during the winter when the weeds and grasses are down. During the summer, high weeds can be difficult. Watch out for critters too! The control point is located near a marsh, ground firmness will be subject to recent rains. The cache is located in falls lake game lands, please use extreme caution during deer hunting season (late fall). (I do not to hike this area during deer season.)

the details:

Park on the shoulder of Mount Vernon Church Road where it crosses Bartons Creek @ N 35* 57.611, W 078* 40.719.

You will know you are on the right track when you start to notice signs of beavers: muddy trails leading from the creek, bark chewed off tree trunks, dams, and stumps that look like they've been hacked off by a midget with a hatchet. The control point is cabled to a tree right over a beaver lodge. It is surrounded by a marsh created by the industrious beavers. Negotiating their handywork can make the cache easier to find.

The Cache is hidden in a 'Good' hiding spot. You should recognize it when you get close. The cache is a large pretzel jar. (It is actually about 40' south of the posted coordinates.) It will hold a lot, but the mouth is too small for CDs (sorry).

Enjoy!

Ironwood #2 - Beaver's Nemesis

N 35° 57.823 W 078° 40.447

Another hard cache in the Upper Barton Creek region.

Here you will find an iron-based cache and you will find an Ironwood tree. I'd like to see a beaver try to chew down this thing!

Before I started geocaching, I really didn't know much about the different types of trees in woods near my house. Sure, I could identify a pine tree and an oak tree (well, when the latter had leaves at least), but beyond that, I was pretty clueless. One very interesting tree that I learned about since geocaching is the Carpinus caroliniana (American hornbeam), more commonly called the "Ironwood" tree.

The American Hornbeam grows in moist soil and commonly occurs in swamps, along streams, and in wet bottomlands -- boy do we have a lot of those around these parts! The neat thing about this tree is the way that you can identify it even without any leaves. The wood seems to be muscular, almost like someone flexing their forearms! This wood is very hard and tough and is used sometimes for making tool handles and wooden wedges.

Parking is available for a single vehicle along the side of the road off of Mt. Vernon Church Rd, just at the bridge over Upper Barton Creek. Hiking Distance from the parking to the cache is just about 0.5 miles, following the orange blazed boundary trail -- once you find it!

You are seeking a lock-n-lock up on the hill above Upper Barton Creek not too far from one of the larger ravines feeding into the main creek.

Once you arrive at this cache, it is likely that you have been "over the river" that is the Upper Barton Creek, and will soon be heading "through the woods" to a destination that may or may not be as scenic as going to your grandparent's house. Good place to stop and take a break at the half-way point around the loop. Also good place to wring out your socks if you slipped off a log and fell in the creek! There is an impressively high ravine wall about 300 feet to the south worth viewing, it has numerous large animal dens about half-way up the wall with a log-bridge leading across the creek to the largest one. Not knowing what sort of carnivore lives in there, I wouldn't recommend attempting to scale the wall and visit the inhabitants!

Terrain rating is based upon coming from Bar-B-Tree (UBC Loop #4) (GC111R1), rating would be 3 if coming from the nearby Mt Vernon Church Rd; if coming from What-er You Lookin' At? (UBC Loop #6) (GC111R4), rating would be a 3.5. FTF prize is an unactivated travel bug tag.

You may feel that you're intruding on someone's backyard, but keep in mind that the lake side of the Orange Blazed boundary line is public gamelands. You're well within your rights to walk the primitive trail right by this Million Dollar house.

Sometimes when we are geocaching we cross the invisible lines that artificially define and divide our world. This is the sixth of a series of Geocaches dedicated to these kinds of Boundaries.

The cache is small lock-n-lock sandwich box container, so small trades only. You will find the cache only a short distance from the boundary here, but go ahead and gawk at the house. You're standing on public land, so you're free to be there! Just don't try to park in their driveway, OK?!?!
