NATURE OF WORK, ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KSA'S:

NATURE OF WORK

Under the immediate direction of the Construction Inspection Manager and under the general supervision of the Project Engineer, the Construction Inspector is responsible for construction inspections of subdivision, commercial development projects and related capital improvement projects related to grading, earthwork, sanitary and storm sewers, waterlines and roadways.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

•Performs resident construction inspection on both subdivision and commercial development projects for construction activities related to grading, earthwork, sanitary and storm sewers, waterlines and roadways, to ensure compliance of construction activities with approved plans and specifications, construction standards, regulations andpolicies.

•Performs related inspections of residential property and right of way projects to verify compliance with all applicable contract documents andplans.

SKILLS

•Highly skilled in interpreting engineering plans andspecifications.

•Skilled with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel,Outlook.

•Skilled in communicating project activities and writingreports.

•Skilled in reading construction plans, specifications and contractdocuments.

•Strong mathematicalskills.

KNOWLEDGE

•Working knowledge of site civil standard construction practices, methods and procedures.

•Knowledge of construction site best practices forsafety.

•Knowledge of City of Columbus and ODOT CMS, as well as the OMUTCD (Temporary WorkZones).

•Knowledge of pipe, subgrade, backfill, and materials testingprocedures.

•Knowledge of measuring tools and testingequipment.

ABILITIES

•Ability to effectively plan, organize, schedule and prioritize daily activities and maintain complete and accurate inspectionreports.

•Ability to effectively communicate, both orally andwritten.

•Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with contractors, other city departments and the generalpublic.

•Inspect work performed by construction crews, measure quantities of materials used, monitor material quality, supervise and document material testing procedures.

•Prepare and complete daily reports recording work performed, measurements, quantities, daily activities, testing, field decisions, and contractirregularities.

•Prepare project punch lists, document field modifications and maintain accurate field mark-up drawings to be used to complete as-builtdrawings.

•Reports all complications, deviations, deficiencies, discrepancies and errors concerning the work to the Construction InspectionManager.

•Advise Construction Inspection Manager of construction schedules and project status.

•Serve as City Liaison between construction crew, property owners, and citizens ensuring minimum inconvenience and damage to affectedareas.

•Inform effected citizens of construction activities that will interrupt utility service to them.

•Addresses, documents and resolves any complaints concerning construction activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

•Requires extended evening and weekend work hours during constructionseason.

•Requires maximum availability during construction season with minimal planned absences.

•The primary duties of this class are performed on an active construction site that will involve exposure to adverse weather conditions or potential personaldanger.

•Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively, to discern verbal instructions and to use atelephone.

•Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, and to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and textmaterials.

•Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee which permits the employee to operate a vehicle and standard office equipment, including a personalcomputer.

•Sufficient personal mobility to routinely traverse uneven surfaces in inherent unevenness of an active construction site and work outdoors underadverse

weather conditions (i.e. open field, heavily wooded areas, uneven terrain and wet/marshy grounds).

•Carry objects, up to twenty-five (25) pounds for varying distances, to perform field inspections.

REQUIRED TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

•Graduation from accredited high school orequivalent.

•Minimum of two years of public works or municipal infrastructure construction inspection experience or equivalent experience in constructionmanagement.

•Possession of valid State of Ohio driverlicense.

•Must be honest, dependable andtrustworthy.

•Must pass an extensive backgroundcheck.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION / SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is a seasonal position running June through November, working 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekend hours as needed.
