PERFORMANCE TASK #2 – UNIT 3 March 2012

National Park Eco-Issue Story/Comic Book Name:

In order to make sure that the environment is protected for future generations, we must educate people of all ages about how to use it in a sustainable way. Canada’s National Park system is one way that the Canadian government works to protect our beautiful natural landscapes. Now it’s your turn! You will research an environmental issue in a Canadian National Park and create a children’s story or comic book (hard copy or digital) in order to educate students who are younger than you so that they know the importance of protecting the environment.

This is a summative assignment and will be marked. There are three main parts to the assignment.

Part 1: Research Your National Park (Knowledge and Understanding 10 marks, Application 8 marks)1. Research the National Park that you have chosen and complete your rough notes worksheet (attached).

2. Start by going to the National Parks website at Click on “national parks” on the left hand side. Then click on “find a national park.” Once you have found your park click on “visitor information” to learn more about the park. Then, click on “natural wonders and cultural treasures.” Here you can start to learn about environmental issues and species at risk in your park.

3. Have you teacher look at your rough notes before you begin your storyboard.

Part 2: Storyboard (Application 5 marks, Thinking 14 marks)

1. Sketch out a rough copy of your story on the storyboard worksheet (attached). This will help you develop your main theme and your characters. This will also help you map out how your finished book will look like.

2. Have your teacher look at your storyboard before you begin making your book.

Part 3: Story Book (K/U 5 marks, and Communication 18 marks)1. You can choose to make a storybook, comic strip or comic book, Powerpoint or prezi to tell an interesting story about your environmental issue. Be creative and develop a main character or theme that will make young people want to read your book. Your book should follow this format:

 Your book (no matter what the format) must be a minimum of 8 pages in length (plus the title page and back cover) and a maximum of 12 pages.

 Your book cover should include the title, author’s name, illustrator’s name and a visual.

 Page 1 is where you should tell the reader about the national park’s name and location

 You need to include a map of the national park on page 1 or 2 so the reader knows where it is in Canada.

 Pages 2-8 are where you tell your story. Each page should have a small amount of text (one paragraph) and one visual.

 Make sure your story has a clear introduction, body and conclusion that is easy for all reader’s to follow.

Have someone peer edit your work before you begin your good copy so you catch spelling, grammar and sentence structure issues!
