The Association endeavors that all hearing impaired children be given the earliest and best possible opportunities to overcome their handicap and to develop in the most natural way. The activities include:
  • Advocacy and Public Education through:
- the “Hearing Alert!” program for early detection
- the “Children’s Rights” program for appropriate education options, including an educational consultation service for parents
- referral and training information for oral interpreters
  • Publication of text and reference books and visual materials, manuals, and the periodicals NEWSOUNDS, VOLTA REVIEW and OUR KIDS MAGAZINE.
  • Information through:
- pamphlets and brochures
- the Volta Library (a research facility) and the A.G. Bell Lending Library
- an answering service for individual inquiries
  • Conventions and Seminars
The Association is organized in three sections:
  1. Amer. Organization for the Education of the Hearing Impaired (AOEHI)
  2. International Parents’ Organization (IPO)
  3. Oral Deaf Adults Section (ODAS)
Membership is open to anyone interested who is connected with the hearing impaired community in any way, privately or professionally. Student memberships and financial aid programs are available.

SHHH is an international organization for the hearing impaired. Through representation at health fairs and professional conventions, and through the media, it raises awareness and advocates the needs of persons with hearing impairments. SHHH operates information and referral system and supports local chapters (see CT ORGANIZATIONS). Through several projects and services (PALS, PALSport and ACCESS 2000), SHHH works on registration, information and increase of and about places with assertive listening systems (see COMMUNICATION) and publishes the SHHH JOURNAL.
