Pre course checklist
The pre course tasks listed below are designed to assist Medicines Information staff attain the most from the residential course
RequirementsPre course tasks
- Access the UKMi website’s Clinical Governance section and be familiar with the service standards.
- Access the UKMi website’s Clinical Governance section and be familiar with risk management standards.
- Use bibliographic databases (e.g. Medline, Embase) to answer some of the enquiries suggested below and bring any enquiries you wish to discuss with the session tutor with you (please ensure identifiable data is removed, e.g. enquirer details, patient details, etc.)
- Re-visit chapter D of the UKMi Training Workbook.
- Read and assess the clinical journal paper provided in conjunction with CASP tool in preparation for the session on day 3. Please bring your copy with you.
- Re-visit chapter 5 of UKMi Training Workbook and/or re-visit ‘Critical Appraisal’ on the current MiCAL
Preparation for enquiry peer review workshop:
- Answer 6 different types of enquiry (a mixture of level 1 and 2 complexity) e.g. pregnancy, ADR, choice of therapy, renal impairment, interactions, IV compatibility. These should be reflected upon and one enquiry selected to present to a small group of 5-6 at the course. You will have 5 minutes to present the enquiry. There will be no visual aids.
- Choose an enquiry that demonstrates the importance of eliciting full background details (questioning skills) and/or effective use of information sources.
- It may aid discussion if you bring with you a printed summary of the enquiry - maximum one side of A4. 6-8 copies (one for each person in the group).
- Suggested format is to use the headings:
- Enquiry details
- Background information
- Search strategy
- Information/Advice given
Items to send to course administrator ()
- Complete and return the Medline/Embase survey – this data is required to ensure the session addresses the needs of all the attendees. See deadline on survey for response time.
- Please send the title of your chosen enquiry to the course administrator () for collation (ensuring that any identifiable data has been removed).Required 2 weeks before the course at the very latest.This will assist in allocating your enquiry sharing group and ensure a good spread of clinical topics within your group.
Bring to the course
- Please bring your NHS Evidence access to the course or your username and password for the platform you usually use to access Medline/Embase. If you would like to use your own/workplace laptop then please bring one – the venue will provide free Wi-Fi access (please inform the course administrator if you are bringing a laptop).
- A copy of the required clinical journal paper for the session on day 3.
