Here I am talking with Lucy Brockbank, a Project Officer with the LeDeR programme.

Lucy:Why do you think the LeDeR programme is important?

Dave: I think the LeDeR Programme is important because reviewing a death of a person with a learning disability will help find out what has worked and what needs to improve. Eventually this will help people with learning disability get the right treatment when they are ill and will help their family and friends to get the right care for the person with a learning disability.

Lucy:What is your thoughts about the University employing people with learning disability?

Dave: I think that it’s a good idea to employ someone with a learning disability because it gives them a purpose and it gives them the same chances as everyone else. Also it’s important that universities give lots of different people a chance to work for them.

Lucy: Why do you think it is important to have someone with a learning disability working with the LeDeR Programme?

Dave: It’s a good idea to have someone with a learning disability working with the LeDeR Programme because it gives them the chance to help other people with a learning disability. A key role of mine is to create easy read material for other people with learning disabilities. This is vital because people with learning disabilities need to be aware of the LeDeR Programme and the service improvements that will be delivered as a result.

Lucy: What’s has it been like working at the University so far.

Dave: Working at the university has been interesting and challenging. I have learnt new skills, such as creating presentations and other documents. I have also got some skills such as presenting information through drama and developing communications that have proved very useful for the team. I like the fact I am an integral member of the team helping deliver many parts of the programme. I like the fact my work will help lots of others with learning disabilities

Lucy: What do other people with a Learning disability think about the LeDeR Programme and the University?

Dave: People with learning disabilities think the work I am doing is fantastic and very important. Such an important project needs lots of views of people with learning disabilities and that is exactly what I am doing as part of my role.
