National Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity
The sixth edition of the National Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity was held on 20th March, 2015 at NCPA, Nariman Point, Mumbai. The highlight of the evening was the ‘Laadli Voice of the Century’ award presented to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. The evening also saw the launch of the book ‘Through the Gender Lens’, a compilation of winning entries of Laadli Media Awards. The Laadli Alumni website (www.alumni.laadli.org) aiming to bring together all those who have been connected with Laadli advocacy initiatives was also launched.
The Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavisgraced the awards as the Chief Guest. Zila Khan, a renowned Sufi singer along with her team enthralled the audience with her soul rendering performance.
A total of 13 national media award winners were shortlisted out of the pool of regional award winners. The jury for these selections included highly esteemed members of the media: Sidharth Bhatia, Dilip De’souza, Monika Wahi, and Anuradha Sengupta, being some.
Some other prominent award winners included Vikas Bahl for the movie Queen, Smita Bharti for the play ‘Jug JugJiyo’ and Swati Tiwari for the book ‘Sawaal Aaj Bhi Zinda Hai’. The jury to judge the most gender sensitive movie included Anuradha Parikh, Deepa Sahi and Nandini Sardesai.
Advertisements which were gender sensitive in the past year were shortlisted and winners were chosen among them in various categories. The jury for adjudging these entries consisted of Tina Mehta, Ramesh Narayan and Mohammed Khan. Titan Raga’s ad titled ‘ Tum Nahi Badle’ received the Grand Prix award for being the most gender sensitive advertisement. In the Advertising Product Category, Havells won the trophy while PC Jeweller’s ‘Woman of the House’ and Raymond’s ‘Being There’ received the Jury Appreciation Citation. In the Service Category Bank of India’s ad on Vehicle Loan received the trophy while Tata Docomo and Bharat Matrimony were presented with Jury Appreciation Citation’s. Nestle ‘Sharing Goodness’ received the award under Brand Promotion Category.
The Awards event was supported by UNFPA and the Canadian Consulate.

Southern & Eastern Region LMAAGS in Vishakhpatnam
The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity for the Southern & Eastern Region were held in Vishakhpatnam, March 10, 2015 at the Hotel Daspalla, Suryabaug. The jury, selected the 32 winners from Southern and Eastern Region, namely Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura. Students of the Natraj Music and Dance Academy performed a Kuchipudi dance for the audience. The Southern & Eastern Region Awards event was supported by Rotary Club, Vishakha Port City. Population First joins NGMA to celebrate International Women’s Day
To mark the 106th International Women’s Day , Population First in collaboration with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) held a half-day event at the NGMA on 8TH March.
The programme started with a presentation of Lalitha Lajmi’s paintings, some of which were never seen earlier. Lalithaji talked in detail about a few of them and how elements around her, like living near the sea, seeing different faces of people , her own thought processes have influenced her works. She also talked about portrayal of women in her paintings.
This was followed by the screening of the documentary film Gulaabi Gang, directed by Nishtha Jain. A panel discussion about the film, how Nishtha got the idea to make the documentary, the various hurdles she faced to capture the whole working system of the Gulaabi Gang provided the audience with interesting insights. The discussion which later shifted on how the projection of women in Bollywood is changing, saw Nishtha, Monica Wahi, a curator, content developer and creative producer and Jeroo Mulla, a teacher closely associated with the technical aspect of making films, engage with each other. Dolly Thakore, a noted theatre personality, moderated the session. The event was supported by United Nations Population Fund.
Northern Region LMAAGS in Raipur
The sixth edition of The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) for the Northern Region, 2013-14 was held in Raipur on February 7, 2015 at the Muktakash Manch, Mahant Ghasidas Museum Campus, Raipur. The jury selected the 19 winners from 293 entries received from Northern Region, namely Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The awards were given away by Ajay Chandrakar, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shatabdi Pandey, Chairperson, Child Rights Commission, Padamshri Fulbasan, a well known Social Activist, Padamshri Surendra Dubey , Secretary, Raj Bhasha Ayog, Rakesh Chaturvedi, Director, Dept. of Culture.
The awards were supported by Directorate of Culture and Archaeology, Chhattisgarh. The evening also saw a Pandavani performance by Ritu Verma .

We had one more year of excitement and fun at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2015. Population First, participating for the fifth time was represented by a team of 200 people, which included participants from IRB, students from various colleges, staff and change makers. All of them walked the entire route wearingLaadlit-shirts and caps holding placards and balloons, to create awareness about the cause. Thanks to their spirit and motivation,Population First raised INR 24,00,000 through SCMM 2015 for our rural development project AMCHI. (Click here to read more on AMCHI http://goo.gl/a9Fe4L ). We were also supported in our fund raising efforts by our nine change runners. One of our change runners, Madhurie Pandit, raised fund for us for the fifth consecutive year. Laadli ROARs’ at IITB’s TechFest
Laadli joined hands with IIT Bombay's annual Science and Technology TECHFEST as a cause partner and launched ROAR - a nation-wide competition for the youth to use their creativity and intelligence to create awareness about violence against women and come up with college-based programs to combat the same. This year’s edition of the TECHFEST took
place from 2- 4th Jan, 2015 at IIT Bombay’s Powai campus.
Various college activities were organized to bring awareness and action through a series of tasks, which included creating a platform for candid discussions, coming up with innovative campaigns to address the issue at the college level and making films of 100 seconds duration on the issue.
The first prize winning campaign was awarded to students from the Sinhgad College of Engineering, Pune. The second prize was won by the students of Sir Padampat Singhania University, Udaipur for their campaign ‘Integrity Gives New Independence To Empowerment’ (IGNITE). A special jury award was given to a team of students from the Btkit Dwarahat (Almora, Uttrakhand).
The film competition received 13 entries from various colleges. The top winning film ‘Advaita’ was made by the students from Amity University, Rajasthan, who used the concept of a mime to bring across their idea.(click here to view Adavaita) The second winner was the film ‘Titli Udi’, (click here to view Titli Udi) by KES Shroff College, Kandivali.
Also, as part of ROAR, Laadli organized a panel discussion on the theme "Where men are truly confident, women are valued" highlighting the changing dynamics of man-woman relationships in the 21st Century in India on 3rd Jan, 2015. The panelist included Dr. Harish Shetty (Psychiatrist), Suneeta Rao (Popstar, Dancer and Stage Actor), Zila Khan (Sufi singer) and Dolly Thakore. Anuja Gulati from UNFPA moderated the session.
Creating future torch bearers in Atgaon
Population First in collaboration with the NSS department of SNDT College Churchgate conducted a gender sensitization workshop at the Aghav Academy, Atgaon. Ninety two members and coordinators from the NSS department attended the workshop held on 12th January. The lecture was based on gender specific topics and social stigmas in society. Five groups performed street plays for the audience to get a better understanding of the topics discussed in the workshop like discrimination between girls and boys, sexual harassment at work place, one sided love and acid attack case, preference for a son and peer pressure in relationships.
Participating in Aaramb
Population First was invited by Nirmala Niketan College to put up a stall for their one-day annual college fest “Aaramb” on 24 January to create awareness about the work the organization does for the students , staff and visitors. Students from Nirmala Niketan are part of Population First’s change makers club, under which they initiate many activities in the college to create awareness about gender.
Workshop on Gender Equality
Population First in collaboration with the economics and sociology department of SNDT College of Arts, Churchgate, organized a workshop on Gender Equality on 21 Jan. The objective of the programme was to create awareness about gender equality among the 120 students and the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. The lecture commenced with a brief introduction of Population First and was followed by a speech given by the college principal, Dr. B.B. Pradhan who highlighted the issue of the falling sex ratios and the importance of gender equality. There was screening of Seven 1 Minute Movies for the audience too. The workshop was concluded by an oath taken by every girl present there to believe in herself and educate people about gender issues in their surroundings.
Celebrating Laadli at Jai Hind College
Population First was invited by NSS students from Jai Hind College to judge role plays based on “ Gender equality or inequality” performed by the college students
on 11th February 2015. From the four groups that enacted the role plays, three showed discrimination against women at home. While the other group portrayed women themselves having low esteem especially in the corporate world. The role plays were enacted in the college campus for the other students too.
