President

  • The duties of the president can include communicating with other officers and facilitating their communication with each other. Each school differs slightly concerning duties. The president might be asked to be the producer of the new member and the officer induction ceremonies. He is in charge of helping to implement the National Honor Society's annual convention. The convention or conference is a national event, though some states also hold state conferences. He must provide an agenda for and preside over all meetings of the NHS executive board. The president is in charge of day-to-day activities for all members. These activities may include preparation for service projects or school events held for entertainment or as fundraisers for school bands, dances or school trips. The president makes speeches, maintains discipline and works with the faculty of the school.

Vice President

  • The vice president fills in for the president when necessary. She might be asked to keep a list of tutors and approved tutoring. The vice president could be asked to organize homecoming activities for the school. She performs all duties delegated by the president and helps plan and implement the National Honor Society convention. Schools decide whether the vice president is in charge of extracurricular school activities.

Recording Secretary

  • There may be a secretary for the juniors and one for the seniors, or just one who handles the registration of new members. The secretary keeps records of all members, recording member status, projects, community service and probationary periods. She keeps the minutes of the executive board meetings and distributes copies to all members. The secretary performs all duties as designated by the president. She is also in charge of all correspondence unless a correspondence secretary is appointed.

Corresponding Secretary

  • This secretary writes thank-you notes to community leaders for their participation in school events. He is in charge of sending probation letters to members whose conduct is called into question. The corresponding secretary maintains a website if there is one. He keeps it current with information and dates to remember.

Activities Officer

  • Some schools appoint an activities officer, or several officers, if needed. The activities officer sponsors society projects. He must be a good communicator to work with other activities officers and with sponsors' contact persons. He keeps a project log with members' names and the number of hours spent on each project.

Public Relations Officer

  • Some clubs have a public relations officer, while others assign these duties to an activities officer or a secretary. The public relations officer makes and posts NHS publicity signs and notices. He is in charge of writing announcements and working with local media. He should gather all information concerning the annual executive board meeting and the NHS convention to be included in the school's newsletter or newspaper.

Other Officers

  • Some schools have a treasurer that maintains bank records and keeps a journal of all monies received and all expenses. A regional representative is expected to attend all meetings and serve as a liaison between the NHS executive board and the chapters within his region. Some schools have action coordinators, while others might have activities advisers. All members and officers must maintain the standards for which they were chosen for membership in the NHS. Officers and members are subject to probation if they miss meetings, activities or events without good reason.

Please print clearly / type and turn in HARD COPY to Room 115 by April 5th 2013.

This is a self-reflective piece, and there is no right or wrong responses.

Thank you for your commitment to NHS leadership!
