2012 TOUR DESCRIPTIONS

THE JEMEZ MOUNTAIN TRAIL AND BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT

SUNDAY, JULY 22, 2012 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Jemez Mountain Trail, declared a National Scenic and Historic Byway in 1998 in recognition of its wonderful natural and historic resources. Your first stop will be the Walatowa Visitors Center at Jemez Pueblo, one of the nineteen Native American Pueblos of New Mexico, situated against the deep red rocks of the Jemez Mountains. The Center provides visitor information about the Pueblo and displays a selection of arts and crafts created by Jemez artisans. You then continue along the Jemez River as it cuts through canyons whose colors change dramatically from brown to brilliant red and orange. This fascinating archaeological site, situated at 7,000 feet above sea level, encompasses over 32,000 acres of wilderness crisscrossed by 60 miles of maintained trails. The Park was designated in 1916 and named for nineteenth-century anthropologist Adolph Bandelier. Frijoles Canyon is famous for its extensive Anasazi ruins and cliff dwellings that date back to about 1100 AD. The Anasazi farmed this canyon for over 400 years and lived in multi-storied stone and mud structures or in caves carved out of the volcanic cliffs. Even if you're not an archaeological enthusiast, you will enjoy climbing the ladders into the caves and kivas. Be prepared for changes in the weather by dressing in layers and wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. Sunscreen recommended.

PRICE INCLUDES: Transportation; professional tour guide; visit to Walatowa Visitors Center; admission to Bandelier National Monument; box lunch; bottled water on coach; all applicable taxes.

ATTIRE: Comfortable light clothing, walking shoes and sunscreen.

SANDIA PEAK TRAM & OLD TOWN

MONDAY, JULY 23, 2012 1:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

This afternoon you will depart for the Sandia Peak Tramway, the world’s longest free-span cable tramway. The 2.7-mile tramway ride to the top will take you through four of the seven life zones found in North America. Traversing these zones is equivalent to taking a trip from Mexico City to Alaska! Once atop Sandia Peak, at an elevation of 10,375 feet above sea level, you will marvel at the thousands of square miles of breathtaking scenery and panoramic views in all directions.

After the tram ride you will continue to Old Town and a brief walking tour of the historic Plaza area. Old Town, the original center of Albuquerque, was founded in the early part of the 18th century and includes San Felipe de Neri church and many historic buildings that form an architectural record of this city’s unique past. There will be time to explore hidden courtyards and stroll under covered portals and shop on your own at the many fine specialty stores and galleries around the Plaza.

PRICE INCLUDES: Transportation; professional tour guide; round trip passage on the Sandia Peak Tram; bottled water; guide and driver gratuities; all applicable taxes.

ATTIRE: Comfortable light clothing, walking shoes and sunscreen.

KAYAKING/CANOEING ON THE RIO GRANDE

TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2012 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a chance to explore the historic and scenic Rio Grande, floating along with the quietly rippling water as it winds its way through Bosque, which opens regularly to spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains. While the upper Rio Grande is renowned for the wild whitewater rushing through the mountains and canyons of northern New Mexico, the middle Rio Grande provides a much gentler, family-friendly experience. The river feels remarkably remote given the close proximity to a major metropolitan area. Blue Heron, Snowy Egret and numerous varieties of waterfowl call the river home at various times throughout the year, while songbirds flock to the forested river banks. Beaver, wild turkey, and even an occasional coyote may be spotted along the way, as the Rio Grande remains a critical resource for wildlife in the arid, high desert climate of central New Mexico.

This outing has the added benefit of a professional guide who is familiar with the nuances of this particular stretch of river. The guides are personable, knowledgeable and fun, and are certified in First Aid and CPR.

PRICE INCLUDES: Transportation; professional tour guide; guided kayaking excursion; bottled water; guide and driver gratuities; all applicable taxes.

ATTIRE: Light weight fast drying clothing, sunscreen, water shoes and no jewelry.

NOTE: Currently 22 single kayaks are available and are issued on a first-come-first-served basis.
