WICKED

Narrator, Principal, Elphaba, Nessa, Galinda

Narrator: Why does wickedness happen? That’s a good question and one that people find somewhat confusing. Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?

After all, Elphaba, our green leading lady, had a childhood. She had a father.... who just happened to be the governor of Munchkinland. ....and a mother, as so many do, and like all families, they had their secrets. And from the moment she was born she was, well...... Different! And everyone knew it, even on her first day of school.

(we see Elphaba & Nessa, arriving at Shiz)

Elphaba: What?! (pause, then to the imagined audience) What are you staring at? (sarcastically) Oooh, do I have something in my teeth? (pause)OK, let’s get this over with. No - I am not seasick. Yes - I have always been this colour. And no - I didn’t chew on grass as a child. OK?!

Nessa: Elphaba!

Elphaba: Oh, and this is my younger sister Nessa. As you can see, she is a perfectly normal colour.

Nessa: Elphaba, stop it, you’re making a spectacle of yourself. You know, father is only sending you here for one reason.

Elphaba: Yes. I know. To look after you, dear sister.

Nessa: So come on, let’s go find our rooms. (she pulls out some paperwork)

Elphaba: (looking confused at the papers) But I know father made arrangements for me.Why did you get a room and I didn’t?

Nessa: Don’t worry, I’m sure there’s just been some sort of mix up. We’ll get it sorted out Elphaba, don’t worry. We’ll go to the Principal’s office.

Elphaba: (getting stressed) As if I don’t have enough to put up with! Everyone staring - (mocking) “Oooh! Look at the green girl! Does she know she’s that colour? You need to get your money back on that fake tan” And now this!

(they arrive at the Principal’s office )

Principal: Well yes, it would appear that there has indeed been some sort of mix up with the paperwork. I do apologise. Now then, the only free rooms we have available are over in West Block, on the other side of the campus.

(we see Elphaba growing more and more angry)

Nessa: Away from me? But father sent Elphaba here to help me. She can’t be on the other side of the campus!

Principal: I’m very sorry, but on the first day of term, there’s nothing else I can do.

Elphaba: (exploding with anger) I NEED TO BE WITH MY SISTER!!

Principal: Erm, well, I did apologise. Perhaps later on in the term when things have settled down a bit...... we may be able to find you a closer room then.

Elphaba: (not listening, pointing directly at the Principal) YOU WILL NOT TAKE ME AWAY FROM HER!!

(Elphaba unknowingly releases a magic force and they all shake uncontrollably, as if being electrocuted. Afterwards, Elphaba looks scared & guilty at what she has done)

Principal: Oh my! Did you just....? (Elphaba shakes her head) In twenty years at Shiz Academy I have never seen a student perform with that level of accuracy without any formal training! Have you ever considered a career in sorcery my dear?

Elphaba: (still confused and shocked) Who me...? I...... er....well, no.

Nessa: (equally shocked) Gosh Elphie.

Principal: Well, if you keep this up, you’ll be meeting the Wizard in no time! I’ll put in a good word for you. He will be most impressed.... most impressed! And to think.... a student of Shiz Academy too! How marvellous!

SCENE 2

Narrator: It wasn’t long before the Principal kept her promise and found a new room for her promising young student. After all, she didn’t want to upset someone as talented as Elphaba. In the meantime, she set about organising a meeting with the wizard.

Principal: Yes, that’s right - just down that way (indicating where the room is) She’ll be right next door to you. The girl she’ll be sharing with is calledGalinda - lovely girl, lovely!

Nessa: Thank you Madame Morrible. (calling to Elphaba) Elphaba, the Principal has found a room for you. I knew she would, it’s right next to mine. You gotta share with another girl, but hey, it’ll be fun. Now we can be together through school just like we planned. Oh Elphie, it’s going to be great!

Elphaba: (downhearted) Share - with someone else? I hadn’t planned on that. But if it means we will be closer then I suppose it will be fine. Oh well, let’s go meet her then. (they head off to meet Galinda, waiting DSR)

Nessa: Here she is, your new room mate. Elphaba, meet Galinda! (theyexchange nods, sour-faced) I bet you’ll be the best of friends! (they glare at each other)

SONG - What Is This Feeling?

SCENE 3

Narrator: And so it seemed that Elphabaand Galinda were destined for a pretty unhappy time at Shiz Academy. Would they ever be able to overcome their differences and find a middle ground? Would they ever be able to get on together?

Galinda: Ugh! That green girl creeps me out. Who could ever go around looking like that? Ah well, at least I won’t have to worry about my room-mate stealing the limelight whenever Fiyero comes around. (enter Nessa)

Nessa: (overhearing) Fiyero? Who’s he?

Galinda: What? You’ve never heard of Fiyero? He’s only the catch-of-the campus, the most handsome boy in the school. How can you not know that!? And I intend to make him mine! He’ll be taking me to the dance at the OzdustBallroom before he knows it!

Nessa: There’s going to be a dance? (downhearted) How lovely.

Galinda: Yes, but I have to get rid of Boq first.

Nessa: Boq? That cute Munchkin boy?

Galinda: That’s the one. He won’t leave me alone!

Nessa: (downhearted still) Gosh, Galinda.

Galinda: (patronizing) Oh Nessa. It must be so hard for you. We are all making arrangements for the dance and you can’t go. Well, can’t dance at least. And who would want to ask a girl who can’t dance to go to the Ball? (Nessa looks at her, hurt) Still, never mind! I know, I’ll see what I can do for you.

Nessa: (flatly) Gee - thanks.

Galinda: Oh, it’s my pleasure! Now you run along whilst I sort things out.

Nessa: Run? (exit Nessa)

...

Galinda: Oh, you know what I mean! (under her breath) Some people are just so touchy!

SCENE 4

Galinda: (crossing the stage) Now, what’s a girl to do? Nessa has no date and I got a date I don’t want! So,....Boqcan take Nessa to the dance and that leaves me free for Fiyero! We’ll make such a cute couple (she giggles)Perfect!

Narrator: And so, the “perfect” Galindahatched her plan. She persuaded poor Boq to escort Nessa to the dance and she went with the dashing Fiyero.

Elphaba: It’s ridiculous! This silly, rich boy appears and everyone’s off to worship him at some cultish social gathering!

Nessa: Even me, I’m going too Elphie. Boq was...

Elphaba: You’ve got a date? With Boq?

Nessa: Sure! He was too shy to ask me at first, but once Galinda encouraged him.....

Elphaba: Galinda! She was part of all this?

Nessa: Don’t you dare say a word against her! I’m about to have the best night of my life, thanks to her. Please try to understand Elphaba.

Galinda: So, time to get ready for the dance. (searching through her accessories) And I’ve even done my good deed for the day. That tragicallybeautiful girl now has a date to take her to the dance - thanks to me! (shecomes across a witch’s hat) Ugh! Granny is always sending me these

hideous hats. (trying it on for a laugh) I should really give it away - but I don’t hate anyone that much! (laughs, then serious) Or do I?

Elphaba: Listen Galinda. Nessa and I were talking about you just now and....

Galinda: And I was thinking about you too! I thought you might want to wear this lovely hat to the dance tonight? It’s your colour!

Elphaba: Oh, I don’t think so.

Galinda: But Elphie - can I call you Elphie? You can’t go to the dance looking like that! What had you planned on wearing anyway?

Elphaba: I, erm...... well, I.....

Galinda: (interrupting) Well don’t you worry about it, Galinda’s here! I’ll get you looking like you’ve never looked before! So,now that we’re friends, I’ve decided to make you my new project.

Elphaba: Oh no, really, you don’t have to do that.

Galinda: I know. That’s what makes me so nice.

SCENE 5

Narrator: And so, everyone went to the ball. Galinda’s plan backfired and it seemed that Fiyero was quite taken with Elphaba in the end. He found that Galinda was too keen on climbing the social ladder and but he saw a softer side to Elphaba that not many people had seen before. However, in a strange twist of fate Elphaba and Galinda became close friends - and before they knew it, it was time for Elphaba to meet the Wizard.

Principal: Gather round everybody - it’sElphaba’s big day. She’s finally off to meet the great and wonderful Wizard Of Oz himself. We’re all so proud of you Elphaba!

Nessa: That’s right Elphie. I’m so proud of you, and I know father would be too.

Elphaba: You’ll be OK without me, Nessa?

Nessa: Of course I will.

Principal: She’ll be fine - don’t you worry. She’s in safe hands here.

Galinda: She’s got Boq to take care of her, right? (they laugh)

Nessa: That’s right Elphie, you go. I’ll be fine here. I’ll even enjoy it without you checking up on me every five minutes! (they laugh again)

Elphaba: I know, I know. (pauses, then turning to Galinda) Come with me.

Principal: Right, now time to go!

Galinda: What?

Elphaba: Come with me. To the Emerald City.

Principal: Oh my goodness!

Galinda: Well, I suppose I have always wanted to see the Emerald City.

Elphaba: So - come with me!

Galinda: Oh, I don’t know...

Nessa: Oh go on Galinda. It will be fun.

Principal: Absolutely dear child - you must go, you have to go! A chance to meet the wizard, my my!

Elphaba: Come on, it’s just one day.

Nessa; Yes, just one short day.
