Key features

Two types of moving image texts which use key features to engage the audience are TV dramas (I will be focusing on soap operas, specifically EastEnders) and reality TV (focusing on Geordie shore).

Both shows are designed to entertain their respective audience using a combination of sound and visuals. These types of programmes can be viewed digitally on portable devices using the internet with access to Netflix and various iPlayer’s run by the TV station.

Both programmes tell stories/ have narrations. In EastEnders story lines always run from one episode to the next meaning if somebody missed an episode or two they will be a bit lost and confused with what is happening; whereas in Geordie shore at the beginning of episodes they will show a recap explaining what has happened recently, this will help the audience understand what has happened/ happening. Also in Geordie shore if an event happened then they won’t carry on with it next episode they will just forget about it.

A similarity between the two programmes would be that they both have a general location where a part of the programme will always take place.

For example, in EastEnders we know that it is not a real life programme but because of the relatable setting being set in a square with houses and pubs it gives us the impression of a real life location and lifestyle. It always helps us to recognise peoples lifestyles with the way they life and creates a sort of bond with the character.

In Geordie shore we can tell that it is real because it is a reality programme although some of it is probably set up for our entertainment. When we see the main location of where Geordie shore is set we know straight away what it is.

A difference between the two programmes would be the music they use in/throughout the programme.

In EastEnders they will use dramatic music/sounds to inform the audience what is happening. At the beginning the programmes will always start the same way with the music and visuals. The music will at the beginning is also a queue to the audience that the show is about to begin.

Whereas in Geordie shore at the beginning of the programme the visuals will be the same but the music at the start and throughout the programme will be different every episode. This music will probably be chart music/ up to date music that is popular.
