ACTIVITY SHEET 6

Frequency Modulation

Name:- (Type Your Name Here)

Student ID :- (Type Your Student ID Here)

Objective

This Activity sheet will introduce and investigate Frequency Modulation. As part of this activity sheet students will be required to research into the topic of Frequency Modulation. The students findings will be documented.

Apparatus

·  Class PC with internet connection

·  Matlab

·  Altium Designer

Method

This activity has been designed to aid students in developing an understanding of another commonly used modulation technique in communications. The students will be required to investigate the definition, mechanisms and most important parameters associated with Frequency Modulation. The students will be required to reference all the work they have performed throughout the document.

Deliverable A.1:- Provide in your own words a brief explanation of the term FM and its use in communication systems. Also in this description provide in your own words a list of the advantages and disadvantages of FM in communications, include also a Figure of a Frequency modulated signal and discuss this figure. Include all references in your written document and at the end of the document.

Deliverable A.2:- Provide a mathematical based description of FM and clearly indicate any processes under taken to reach the final equation. Simulate your final equation in Matlab indicating clearly the carrier and baseband frequencies.

Deliverable A.3:- Discuss the Modulation index in FM systems. Provide an equation for the modulation index and clearly explain any terms in the equation. Discuss the difference between wideband and narrowband using the modulation index and provide typical examples of both cases.

Deliverable A.4:- Discuss Carson’s rule and how it applies to an FM system and provide an example of its use.

NOTE :-

DO NOT Cut and paste your information from the Internet, all definitions must be in your own words.

YOU MUST use microsoft Equation Editor for all Eqautions.

YOU MUST reference all material used.
