GENERAL INFORMATION
Overview
In 1993, the Vehbi Koç Foundation established Koç University as a non-profit private university in Istanbul, Turkeycommitted to the pursuit of excellence in both teaching and research.
The mission of KoçUniversity is to be a center of excellence, one that strives to provide a world-class education to its students, create new knowledge via the research of its faculty, apply the acquired knowledge for the benefit of society, and equip its students with the highest sense of ethics, social responsibility and good citizenship.

Exchange Partners
Koc University has currently over 100 exchange partners around the world, 2/3 of which are Erasmus bilateral agreements. A full list can be found on under “Partner List”.
Incoming Exchange Students
Koc University welcomed 177 students in the 2009-10AYand is expected to host 215 in 2010-11 AY. Koc attributes this increaseto its expanding partnership base and its continued pursuit of academic excellence.Ultimately, however, our incoming students are our best advocates, as they go back to their home institutions and relay their persistent satisfaction with their experience at Koç University—a satisfaction that results from an excellent infrastructure and support system that secures each student’s success and happiness at KU.
Outgoing Exchange Students
Koc University sent close to 100 students to partner universities in 2009-10 AY. The number of outgoing exchange students continues toincrease as we further our marketing efforts and sign more exchange agreements with new institutions around the world.

Application Procedures
Once our partners have nominated online, students will be provided a password to be able to submit their application forms via the online link.
Course Information
All courses are taught in English. A minimum of 4 courses (3 KU credits each) is recommended, the normal workload is 5 courses. Students should fulfill prerequisite courses when appropriate. Independent study is available upon agreement with a Faculty member.

Turkish Language & Society (TURK 201)
This course is offered for non-native speakers each semester and is valued 3 KU credits.
Learning Expectations
Attendance is mandatory for all classes; participation in class is almost always graded. Grading depends on the instructor / course. In general, the grade distribution involves 15% participation & attendance, 35% final exams, 50 % other exams or projects.The lectures usually take 75 minutes, and the lecturers usually use slide shows as a teaching method. Additionally, there might be discussion sessions, problem sessions and labs according to the type of course.
Transcripts
The transcript of the exchange student is mailed to the Exchange Office of the home institution at the end of the semester.
Turkish Student Visa
All foreign nationals who will be studying in Turkey are required to have a student visa for the duration of their academic stay. It is the exchange student’s responsibility to apply for a student visa prior to entering Turkey, using the acceptance letter from Koç University as proof of purpose. Please make sure to get a visa specifically related to education. This could be an education or student visa. Ensure that your visa is not a work visa, tourist visa, or any other kind of visa but a student visa.In order to get a student visa, exchange students apply to the Turkish Consulate nearest to their town of residence. Please note that it may take up to 8 weeks to get the visa. You may find Consulate information through the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website,
Residence Permit
Upon arrival at KU, the student must apply for a residence permit. According to the Turkish Government regulations, residence permit applications should be submitted within one month of arrival. Students should not schedule a trip outside of Turkey until they obtain their residence permits. During Orientation, students are given complete instructions on obtaining their residence permits.
Orientation Program
A one-week Orientation program is offered every semester (Fall & Spring) for theincoming exchange students.
During Orientation, the Exchange Office organizes both a welcome dinner and a tour of Istanbul.
Exchange Student Mentorship Program
Koc University Exchange Office assigns student mentors to each incoming exchange student. The mentors play an integral part in introducing students to Koc and to Turkey. They help students understand the life at Koc and assist them in fulfilling the requirements of the program. Mentorship program is highly rated by the incoming students: students have said that “the mentors add value to their lives at Koc and ease their transition.”
Exchange Newsletters
The exchange newsletter is published twice a year and shared with the Koc community. The newsletter is a source of information on the exchange programs, students and activities. The issues of the exchange newsletter can be found on the exchange website.
International Students’ Society (ISS)
Founded in 2006, this student-run club organizes both on-campus and off-campus activities to enhance the student experience and aims to bond incoming exchange students with local students.
ISS sponsors at least five events throughout the semester. Some of the activities include trips to Turkish baths, soccer games, museums, karaoke venues, and bicycle tours on the Princess Islands.
Health Insurance
Insurance is mandatory for the exchange students and can be purchased in their home country or in Turkey.

Residential Facilities
Koç University dormitories have a capacity of 2,334 students, and 102 on-campus apartments provide housing options for faculty.
A separate housing form is not available for the Incoming Exchange Students. Student housing requests will be addressed in the general application form on the exchange website. If the student chooses on-campus accommodation, the student is guaranteed a double room, with a Turkish roommate, either on the main campus or the west campus. Student housing applications are processed by the Dormitory Management, which has exclusive authority in the matter. Exchange students will be informed of their placement upon arrival. Housing fee per Semester per Person (price for 2010/11)
There is an initial room deposit of 400 TL (€200 / $250). At the end of the exchange semester, Dormitory Management refunds this deposit if no damage has been done to the rooms. Typically, students pay 3,200 TL (€1,500 / $2,100) on main campus or 1,750 TL (€800 / $1,100) on west campus for a double room. However, under special circumstances, students may be given a single room (for 4,000 TL - €1,900 / $2,600) or a quadruple room (for 1,400 or 1,600 TL - €700 / $900 or €800 / $1,000).
Freemover
Freemovers should contact the Registrar’s Office () for application information for admission as a non-degree foreign student.
STUDENT LIFE
Main Campus Facilities
- Consists of sixty buildings—academic colleges, administrative offices, laboratories, library, student dorms, faculty residences, social and sports facilities—all located on a sprawling 62-acre estate
- Library spanning over 8,000 square meters circulates approximately 5,500 items per month and houses over 300,000 resources total
- Indoor sports facilities include a multi-purpose center used for basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton, handball, squash and racquetball, a two-floor fitness center, an aerobics step studio and a 156-meter jogging track
- Outdoor sports facilities include an olympic-size soccer field, swimming pool, ice skating rink, tennis courts and a basketball court
- The 370-seat Sevgi Gönül Auditorium and 310-seat Engineering Auditorium are used for cultural activities and art events throughout the year
- Other facilities include cafeterias, canteens, cafes, hair dresser, full service bank, ATM machines, supermarket, dry cleaning, bookstore, post office, Apple Store and 24-hour computer labs
Health Center
KU has an on-campus Health Center with 24-hour emergency service. The Health Center provides comprehensive free daily health care during working hours and emergency diagnostic services at night. In case of emergency or situations requiring serious medical attention, free transportation to the closest hospital is provided 24 hours by the fully equipped university ambulance.
Student Clubs

Security
There are security guards on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students must present student ID at the gate.
There are “visitor guidelines” (as explained in the Housing Contract) that each student must obey.
