Aim / Rationale:

Worldover urbanization is in an unprecedented upward swing. In 1950, 30% of the world’s population was urban, and by 2050around two-thirds of the world’s population is projected to be urban. At present around 80% of Latin America and the Caribbean is urban Africa and Asia are urbanizing faster than other regions and 56% and 64% respectively of them are anticipated to be urban by 2050. As a result of such dynamics, we are bound to experience issues such as higher air and water pollution, traffic congestions, energy shortages besides inadequacy on numerous fronts.

In such a scenario, smart sustainable cities are the way forward. As per International Telecommunication Union, a smart sustainable city (SSC) is an innovative city that uses Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects.”

Universally the country governments have endorsed the fact that ICT and new sensor technologies can not only help to address these challenges but can also improve the quality of life of the urban populace. India through its forward looking ‘100 Smart Cities’ initiative is on the verge of being the first country in its category to realise this futuristic aim. With software as its forte, India has already shown up as the initial mover in this complex multidisciplinary domain of Smart Cities.
