Event/Project: GB Honduras Brigade 2016

Location: Honduras

Date: December 17th- 23rd

Time:

Purpose of Event/Project: This year, Global Brigades will be flying to Honduras December 17th through the 23rd to continue our organization’s mission. Before we fly, we must raise $1,500 per chapter and, since we have two chapters on UK’s campus, Medical/Dental and Public Health, we must raise $3,000 total.

Global Brigades applies this money towards opening clinics that provide basic check-ups, dental care, medications, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and gynecology exams to community members is rural southern Honduras. They also use the money to purchase medications, pay physicians and nurses, hire translators, and to purchase toothbrushes and glasses. With the money, over a three day period, the clinic our chapter opened last year saw over 650 adults and 100 children, providing them with checkups, dental care, and referrals if needed.

This year, we will also be opening a vision center at the clinic we open when we’re in country. As the first year this program is being offered, purchasing the most glasses is imperative. There is only one optometrist in the entire southern region of Honduras and no optometry school in the entire country. Since most community members in Honduras don’t even have access to basic medical and dental care, there’s no way they’d have access to vision care as well. Our hope is to bring down at least 200 near and farsighted glasses, 100 bifocals, and 100 sunglasses.

Total Cost: $5,000

Org funds used: Thus far, every student attending the brigade must raise their own funds for their plane ticket as well as the brigade fee. The Masons of the Lexington area have already pledged $1,000 towards our goal and we will be doing fundraisers including letter drives, canning, and working the football concession stands at UK games. To keep the cost of the brigade as low as possible, we do not charge a membership fee.

Purpose of Org: The purpose of this organization is to provide a source of competitive basketball to students whom are not able to participate in varsity athletics. The major goals of this organization are to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and a sense of unity while keeping a competitive environment.

Type of Grant: Club Sport Grant ($1,500)

Event/Project:

Location:

Time:

Purpose of Event/Project: The purpose is to provide students an opportunity to continue playing basketball that cannot compete at the varsity level. We play in an organized league, the National Club Basketball Association (NCBBA), where we play other universities. In doing so, we have to pay for travel expenses, equipment, referees, and occasionally for court rental. Alumni Gym was our practice facility but due to renovations we can't use it. There is a high demand for court availability in the Seaton Center and in the Johnson Center, especially when intramural basketball begins, so we have to rent courts quite often. This leads to a significant increase in our yearly costs.

Total Cost: $5,350

Org funds used: Each member, including all officers, will pay $150 in dues.

We will have a letter writing fundraiser where each member will send 10 letters to family members/close friends asking for donations. As a second fundraiser, we will sell shirts and hoodies.

Purpose of Org: We aim to advance the development of the chemical engineering profession by promoting excellence in chemical engineering education and practice, upholding professional standards, and stimulating collaborative efforts among industry, universities, government, and professional societies.

Our chapter at UK, specifically, works to provide chemical engineering students with additional career development, networking, and volunteer opportunities. We aim to enhance the education that students receive in class with relevant activities that will provide the skills and knowledge necessary for success beyond undergraduate studies. Part of this includes mentoring younger students in the program by discussing our experiences and helping them discover their specific interests.

Purpose of Org: UKIPhO is dedicated to promoting and advocating a career in the pharmaceutical industry to student pharmacists at the UK College of Pharmacy. This is a field of pharmacy that was previously unrepresented by student organizations at the UK College of Pharmacy.

Type of Grant: General Funding ($750)

Event/Project:

Location:

Purpose of Event/Project: IPhO is working to sponsor a trip to visit the Mylan pharmaceutical facilities in Pittsburgh, PA and Morgantown, WV. While Mylan appears to be generous enough to let the IPhO members tour their facilities at no charge, there will be significant costs associated with transporting and housing the members interested in attending the trip. The trip will offer IPhO members the opportunity to see the direct impact pharmacists have on the field of industry as well as foster networking opportunities. However, additional funding will make the trip much more financially feasible for the members.

Total Cost: $750

Org funds used: The majority of the organizational funds for IPhO are generated by the local member dues of $25 per member. However, in order to encourage participation at a national level, local dues are waived for students who register as IPhO national members.

IPhO is also hosting a chili cook off in early November that is expected to generate between $200 and $400 for the organization. The chili cook off however, will require some level of funding to establish, in order to purchase plates, supplies, and a prize for the winner. IPhO will purchase the food-related items with organization funds, but being a new organization, we expect to be lacking in additional funding for supplies to entice the student body to attend the event.

Through active participation in campus activities and fraternity programs, LKS members cultivate valuable leadership skills and first-hand experience with group dynamics. With an emphasis on women's health issues, LKS educational programs enhance professional development in the field of pharmacy by giving members the understanding necessary to serve patients knowledgeably and with confidence. Event/Project: Hope Gala

Location: Copper Roux at Red Mile

Date: 20-Jan-17

Time: 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Purpose of Event/Project: This event is a formal philanthropic event that Lambda Kappa Sigma (LKS) has been putting on annually for over 10 years. The event is meant to be an inter-professional event that integrates the College of Pharmacy, UK Medical School, UK Physical Therapy School, UK Dental School, and UK Nursing School. On top of being an event that brings together inter-professional health college students, Hope Gala’s main purpose is to raise money to support Project HOPE, our national philanthropy. All profits are to be donated to Project HOPE, and the money is used to help deliver medications, medical supplies, health experts, and medically trained responders to areas of disaster around the globe that need it the most.

In our past years of hosting this event, LKS has been unable to break-even. Each year, the costs of renting a venue and hosting the event have cost us more money than we have been able to make back through ticket sales. Despite this, our organization donates at least $500 to Project Hope every year, even if we were unable to raise that much money from all our Project Hope-designated fundraisers. This year, I want LKS to not only break even from Hope Gala, but also to make a decent amount of money to be donated towards Project Hope.
