Fall Concerns
1) Name: Chad WheelerE-mail Address:
Concern: As a new student I was concerned to find practically no filter or guidelines on what can be done or specifically watched in the SUB and in the dorm lobbies. Is there no regulation of the kind of movies and TV shows that can be watched in the lobbies or SUB? More than a few times I have walked into these areas and found sexually explicit and blatantly immoral content on TV. Also several times I have walked into the dorm lobbies and found couples laying on the couches together, legs and bodies intertwined; showing no decency or respect for their school or anyone around them. And when I asked others in the lobby about it (if there were rules against it) they told me there were not. Whether that is true or not I do not know, still, if there are rules against that kind of behavior they were not known or enforced. This is disturbing to me because I thought I was coming to a school that represented Jesus and what I have found in these areas, at least, are far from even general morality. I don't know if the Student Senate is the right place to send this concern, but maybe you will know what to do with it. We represent Christ in the way we help the Hurricane Victims, but when it comes to our internal health and well-being; how do we represent?
Proposed Resolution: I don't know what the resolution process should look like, but I would like to see some guidelines in the dorms and SUB, especially (and most easily) with the content of what comes though the TV. Certain channels can be blocked, and in my opinion, should be blocked. And just in my personal opinion, I think movies in these areas should be limited to PG-13; for safeties sake, not that Christians cannot watch Rated-R movies, but in public places like these, it would probably be a safe rule to say no Rated-R movies. Students who want to respect their minds and hearts should not have to come into the lobby and find offensive and immoral content.
I discussed with Randal a new filtering company and obtained a copy of the channels for the committee to look over and offer approval. Kari Wood and the dorm supervisors feel they have the couple situation well under control in the lobbies. Chad was emailed with the results and invitation to ask more questions – no response
Randal and I went through the channels on the TV in the SUB and blocked certain inappropriate channels, like MTV or SPIKE. (*And I don’t know if this is a result of these concerns of not, but apparently the movies in the dorm common areas are now limited to PG-13)
2) Name: Esther De LeonE-mail Address:
Concern: There are no phones for students, who don't have cell phones at all times, or not at all, to use. There are also no payphones.
I emailed and informed of answer given last year at the forum. Esther was emailed with the results and invitation to ask more questions – no response
3) Name: Amelia E-mail Address:
Concern: about students driving on both sides of the parking area where the American Heritage building is located. Today, I saw three students driving out of through the entrance way. And a guy in a jeep driving into the parking lot from the exit.
Proposed Resolution: Put one-way signs, maybe some of these students will be able to read that they are driving on the wrong side of the parking lot. (The results would be that it will avoid an accident. Most students are in a hurry to leave the parking lot, while others are coming into the parking lot. I have seen two cars coming at each other, and this is an accident waiting to happen.)
Manny was addressing the concern. Once Manny resigned from Senate, this concern was given to Brittanie Lassiter. I am still waiting for action, but Joe Organ is aware of the concern.
4) Name: Jessica ArmstrongE-mail Address:
Concern: NO sidewalk from 19th to Admit building...
Proposed Resolution: Can't we get a sidewalk put in there? It would help students who are now walking to school because of the high gas prices.
5) Name: Chad PriceE-mail Address:
Concern: Lack of a crosswalk, walkway, and safe lighting from apartments by Frankfort to be able to safely cross the street and walk to campus in the evening.
Proposed Resolution: Paint a crosswalk at a central point across Frankfort, and have some sort of lighted walkway to access campus. It would be the area of Frankfort right across from Johnson Hall, students currently have to cut across traffic without any crosswalk and walk part-way through a field of tall grass to get onto paved campus grounds.
Brittanie met with Joe Organ and discussed both Jessica and Chad’s concern. Both concerns will be negated upon the construction of the new Admin building, so Joe doesn’t feel that they should put the work into a project that will be destroyed with the beginning of construction. The committee agreed and Jessica and Chad were emailed with the result and an invitation to ask more questions – neither of them responded
6) Name: AmberE-mail Address:
Concern: We have to pay a $75 doctor fee. I already have insurance, so I have to pay for something I'll never use.
Proposed Resolution: Why can't it be optional?
Katy met with the Business office and discussed the fee. The doctor’s fee is not optional because his salary is based on it. Amber was emailed with the results and invitation to ask more questions – no response
7) Name: JasonE-mail Address:
Concern: we need bike racks at campus buildings
I emailed and informed of answer given last year at the forum. Jason was emailed with the results and invitation to ask more questions – no response
8) Name: DoraE-mail Address:
Concern: lately, I’ve noticed all the litter on campus. I don’t want to be mean or anything, but it just reminds me of being in a public high school where no one really cares. It’s kind of embarrassing too because if you go over to tech, you don't see this kind of thing.
Proposed Resolution: a clean-up, and then keep the litter off the ground and in the trash can.
Monica put a student announcement in chapel to remind students to clean up. Also, maintenance was informed so that the trash pick-up could be more timely and debris wouldn’t be left to be blown around by the wind
9) Name: Jacinda JudahE-mail Address:
Concern: People always drive extremely fast through the East Katie Rogers Parking Lot (In front of the E1 apartments), and it always hard to see if people are coming.
Proposed Resolution: Maybe we could get a speed bump or something. Thanks!
This concern was addressed by Brittanie. She felt that the students would be unresponsive to speed bumps, but that will looked at again this semester since the safety of students is important. Joe Organ knows about the concern
10) Name: Greg SmithE-mail Address:
Concern: Where is the TV?? How many thousands of dollars do we each pay and we have no TV. Honestly... God doesn't hate TV. So neither should we.
Proposed Resolution: Get a cable box above each dorm so we can all watch some TV and our dorms won't be so boring.
I emailed and informed of answer given last year at the forum. Greg was emailed with the results and invitation to ask more questions – no response
11) Name: Crystal E-mail Address:
Concern: Library does not have a whole puncher that works, it is really old.
Proposed Resolution: Get a new whole puncher that actually works.
Miles looked into staplers and whole punchers for the library. Apparently the only ones that had ever been in the library were donated by students; the library has never supplied any. Senate voted to purchase electric staplers and heavy-duty hole-punchers what would be protected from being stolen. 2 staplers and 2 hole-punchers were donated.
12) Name: Dana PhillipsE-mail Address:
Concern: Hello Jessica, who will otherwise in this document, be known as "JB". I have a really annoying problem that has been bothering me these past few years on campus. Mosquito's....plain and simple. LCU has brilliantly added chairs and tables, benches and swings, etc. for students to sit and enjoy in the mall area. However, LCU, in all her wisdom, still has standing water all over campus, despite her best efforts to not. This makes all the additions in the mall quite a miserable experience, since one cannot sit in a chair more than 2.185 seconds (precisely) without getting attacked by 38 mosquitoes (precisely). I realize that it is getting to the end of mosquito season, however it will not freeze until October 31st, or thereabouts, leaving 5 ish weeks of infestation. Consequences of a lack of action are a possible outbreak of sickness around campus. Also, the additions to the mall area will seem quite meaningless, and will continue on unused.
Proposed Resolution: I propose that LCU fix this problem..lol... One suggestion is to fog the campus, I'm not quite sure on the procedure of this, but I am pretty sure that the City of Lubbock will fog the streets if you request them to. However, LCU is still a big enough campus that the fog will not reach the inner parts of campus, i.e. "the mall." So maybe there is a possible hand held fogger, some kind of research team that can find out where the largest population of mosquitoes are being bred at and kill them there, or some other kind of alternative mosquito exterminator (natural of some sort??). |^^^| Thank you for your time "JB" <(*-*)> An anonymous student who shall otherwise be known as "Dana Phillips"
I emailed Joe Organ about the issue. Rachael and I talked with Joe about it and we felt since winter was upon us it wasn’t an extremely timely issue. Joe informed us that the city trucks do drive through and spray frequently. The problem of standing water that causes mosquitoes has also been helped with the hills in the mall directing the water to the drainage.
19) Name: Mary Lynn GuerreroE-mail Address:
Concern: There are no lights at night at the education building parking lot. Its okay when we all leave somewhat at the same time, but when I leave a little late or someone else does, the parking lot is not well lit. I feel unsafe.
Proposed Resolution: I already pay a fee for parking, why not up the fee a little more. I wouldn't mind the extra fee if it means a better lit parking lot. If education majors are using the parking lot in the evenings, (mainly graduate students)why not pay for it.
Monica addressed this concern. It was determined that there was adequate lighting outside of the education building; it was just not being utilized. They are now turned on.
20) Name: Joseph SmithE-mail Address:
Concern: I know this may be ridiculous to even bring up, because I know it is probably set in stone, but I have friends that go to several Christian colleges, but LCU is the only one that has chapel every day. I like chapel, but I am married and have a family, and it makes things somewhat difficult. I have also noticed that many times the services are not well prepared, and are kind of a waste of time. This is my opinion, and I completely understand if you see things differently. Thank you for your time.
Proposed Resolution: Having chapel only two or three days per week, but putting more into it.
I emailed Joseph about his concern and sent him a copy of the chapel attendance policy. It seemed from his email that he may not have had the correct understanding of the policy. Since chapel is not required if you live off campus and do not have class before or after, it shouldn’t have interfered with his schedule. Also, making it three days a week is possible for yourself since you receive 14 absences now. I did inform Kirk of the preparation aspect and the fact that chapel has been slightly skewed this semester because of dealing with the RIP and changed timetable was addressed. I encouraged him to respond, but never heard back from him.
21) Name: Justin SammonsE-mail Address:
Concern: LIVING CENTER PARKING
Proposed Resolution: Put the residents by the Living Center and not by the buildings.
Katy addressed this concern. The residents of the Living Center have the parking lots directly next to it, so there was confusion on what the exact problem was. He was encouraged to respond, but never did.
22) Name: Eric MolinaE-mail Address:
Concern: The CDC parking lot is overcrowded especially after chapel with LCU resident cars. Commuters have limited parking, and we're running out of parking space!
Proposed Resolution: Make the CDC parking lot a 'Commuter ONLY lot.
Katy addressed this concern. The CDC parking lot is for Commuters and Faculty only. It really would not make sense for any students to be parking at the CDC before chapel because there is a parking lot at the RIP. If there is a problem with that, it is probably because students are parking in that lot is for class at the Fieldhouse. Security was notified and they said they would increase their monitoring of that parking lot.
23) Name: Laura TobiasE-mail Address:
Concern: When it rains heavily or even just when the sprinklers have been on, there is a lake between my apartment and the parking lot in the big open area behind apartment building E3. And when the sprinklers are on, there is no way to get into or out of the apartment without getting your legs and feet soaked.
Proposed Resolution: Build a RAISED sidewalk through the open area out to the parking lot so that you can get through, even if it has rained or the sprinklers have been on. Also, adjust the sprinklers so that there's at least a small pathway to get through without getting a shower as you come through.
24) Name: Debi StevensE-mail Address:
Concern: The build up of water between the east apartments in the grass as well as on parts of the existing sidewalk.
Proposed Resolution: A raised sidewalk between the buildings.
I met with Joe regarding these two concerns. We discussed the necessity of the layout of the apartments for the optimal drainage of water from the houses as required by the building permits. The sidewalks that are currently provided are arranged to be the least obtrusive to the water situation. The area Laura discussed is particularly problematic, so more dirt was brought in a few weeks ago to level out the ground again. Dirt will continue to be brought in sporadically, but new sidewalks will not really be much of a benefit. Laura and Debi were informed of the situation and encouraged to respond. Laura had more to discuss, so I am arranging a meeting with her and Joe to discuss the situation further.
Spring Concerns
- Name: Ron PattilloE-mail Address:
Concern: that area between the behavioral science building and the sub and caf, where there used to be a driveway, but they filled with dirt and planted with grass, however they then put in a ramp and when it rains the people who dirve their trucks over that muddy patch track mud on to the sidewalk which is more annoying than water on the sidewalks, which is by the way another matter entirely.
Proposed Resolution: My proposed resolution is that we make it a very inexpensive rock garden sort of a thing or put up a sign so that people who normally park their vehicles there. can park in parking lots like the rest of us. I guess this will prove whether student senate actually puts to use the funds we give them.
Ben Boston addressed this concern. The problem came from construction drivers who could not drive elsewhere because of the nature of the work they were doing. Ron Pattillo was contacted and informed of the response. He responded, telling Ben that he had never sent that email…
- Name: Aaron BellE-mail Address:
Concern: In the parking lot between the Moody and AH, it is a little dark at night and when people are crossing into the parking lot it is hard to be seen.
Proposed Resolution: Put lights in the middle grassy area of the parking lot, or a light shining from the corner of the AH.
Brittanie Lassiter addressed this concern. Joe Organ is addressing lighting.
