Dear Parents,

While November and December can often be a blur of frantic activity for many, we intend for it be a time of learning and growth in our classroom. Among our many first grade curriculum goals for this quarter are the following social studies objectives:

n  Students will explain the importance of celebrations and their impacts on local communities.

n  Students will compare the traditions and holidays of various cultures.

The following assignment will help your child meet these academic goals.

FAMILY TRADITIONS PROJECT

Late fall/early winter is a festive time for families. Holidays abound. Each family celebrates the season in their own way. This project is an opportunity for your child to share something unique about your family and the traditions surrounding your celebrations.

Projects MUST include the following items:

1.  A short, neatly written explanation of your family’s holiday tradition and why it means so much to you.

2.  A detailed, student created illustration showing some aspect of the discussed tradition.

NOTE: Items 1 & 2 should be completed on paper no larger than 8-1/2” x 11” so that work

can be copied to be included in a class book. Students may use as many pages as are necessary.

3.  An item that further explains the tradition. This could be a cherished memento, a special festive food [keep in mind that a store bought version is required if it is to be shared], or some other object that makes your tradition come alive for our class.

All projects are due (and will begin being presented) on MONDAY, DECEMBER 10TH. Please note that while parental oversight and input are appreciated, this is your child’s assignment and should reflect his/her thought and effort.

Please sign the form below to acknowledge your receipt of this outline. Jot me a note if you have any questions. I can’t wait to see all that your children have to share!
