MYP Unit 3: Ecology

Objective:Students will be able to understand and explain how we as humans affect the natural environment around us.

AOI: Environment

Unit Questions: What does it mean to be a good steward?

Students will be responsible for performing research and creating a presentation (PowerPoint, brochure, video, etc.) of their choice on one of the following topics:

  1. Invasive species
  2. Define the term: invasive species
  3. Include the origin of the invasive species, its natural habitat, and natural predators, suggestions/theories on how the organism invaded the new habitat
  4. Describe the impact of the species on its new environment
  5. What is being done about the problem
  6. How can you/we help to prevent invasive species from spreading to new environments?
  7. How can we save the Chesapeake Bay? (Pick one major issue)
  8. Pollution (air, water)
  9. Global Climate Change
  10. Energy Conservation (alternate fuels, hybrid cars, the "green movement" )
  11. Waste Management (recycling, landfills, toxic waste, etc)
  12. Human Overpopulation (food & water shortages, habitat destruction)
  13. Genetically modified crops and animals

For topics, 2-8 you need to answer the following questions about your topic:

  • What is the problem? How do we know there is a problem (what evidence is there)?
  • What causes the problem?
  • What are the possible future effects of the problem? How will it effect the world?
  • What is being done to solve the problem? Are there laws related to the topic?
  • What can an individual do to help?

All presentations should end with an answer to the unit question (What does it mean to be a good steward?)
