myGov gives you fast, simple access to government online services in one place.
By linking your myGov account to the ATO, you can now manage your tax and super affairs whenever it suits you.
You can lodge and check the progress of your income tax return as well as update your personal details, keep track of you super and arrange to pay a debt.
If you don’t have a myGov account, you can create one easily. Go to ato.gov.au and, under Online services,click Log on.
You’ll be redirected to my.gov.au. Select Create a myGov account.
Read and accept the terms of use, enter an e-mail address only you will use, and create a password. For security reasons, the email address cannot be used for any other myGov account, such as your partner’s.
Choose and answer three secret questions. These are questions only you would know the answers to. Choose questions you will remember easily and whose answers are unlikely to change over time.
You now have a myGov account. Your myGov username will be e-mailed to you. Keep it somewhere safe for future reference.
Once you have a myGov account, you can link to the ATO’s online services. On the list of member services, find Australian Taxation Office and select the green link icon aligned to it on the right hand side of the screen.
You will now need to provide some additional information to identify your ATO record.
If you have an existing ATO online account, simply use your tax file number and ATO online account password to link myGov to your ATO records.
If you don't have an ATO online account, you’ll need to answer a series of questions specific to you.
This will include providing your tax file number, given name, and date of birth. Enter information carefully and accurately so that it will match your details held by the ATO. If your details have changed since you last dealt with the ATO, you will need to update them before you can complete the link. For information on how to do this, visit ato.gov.auand search for ‘updating your details’.
Agree to the terms and conditions of use and click next.
You will also need to answer two questions – specific to you – from information contained in two of the following.
A notice of assessment received in the last five years, a PAYG summary received in the last two years, a super account statement from the last five years, a dividend statement from the last two year, a Centrelink payment summary from the last two years, your bank account details. If you choose to use your bank account, it must be an account you had your individual income tax refund paid into last year, or one that has earned interest in the last two years.

Once you’ve finished answering these questions, you’re done. You have successfully linked your myGov account to your ATO records.
