Myanmar- Description of Methodology

1.Political Boundaries:

Myanmar is located between latitudes 09 and 28 N and longitudes 92 and 101 E. It is situated in Southeast Asia and is bordered on the north and northeast by China, on the east and southeast by Laos and Thailand, on the south by the AndamanSea and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by Bangladesh and India. The total land area is about 677,000 square kilometers

Myanmar is divided into 7 States and 7 administrative divisions.

2.Data Sources:

Population:

Population data for the year 1990, for all the 14 states and divisions was collected from the publication “Statistical Yearbook 2001,” published by the Government of The Union of Myanmar, Central Statistical Organization. Rural, urban population for the year 1990 was not available. Therefore, 1983 census data for rural, urban population was used to rescale the 1990population. Data on working population, area and density were also obtained from the same source. GWP population and area figuresdownloaded form the g-econ server were used for further cell analysis.

RIG’s:

Myanmar_Province file containing the information regarding longitude, latitude, RIG’s and admin name for the 14 states and divisions was downloaded from the g-econ server. This file was either prepared by Steven Citron-Pousty or Kyle Hood. Arc View program was also used to get the RIG’s for all states and divisions of Myanmar. The RIG’s computed through Arc View and available in the Myanmar_province file were found to be comparable.

GDP:

The GDP data for the year 1990-91 for various sectors of Myanmar economy was obtained from the “Statistical Yearbook 2001,” published by the Government of The Union of Myanmar, Central Statistical Organization. The GDP figures were subdivided into agricultural GDP and non-agricultural GDP. Per capita GDP for the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors was computed by dividing the GDP of each sector with their respective working population. The data was further used to calculate the per capita GDP for each state and division. The unit of currency of Myanmar is known as “Kyat.”

Methodology:

“Rural, Urban population and labor force” methodology:

  1. Following data was obtained before further analysis;

a)Total population of the country during 1990,

b)Economically active population of the country during 1990.

  1. Economically active population was divided by the total population to get the urban and rural part rate.
  2. Province wise rural labor force and urban labor force was calculated by multiplying the rural part rate with the rural population and urban part rate with the urban population of each province.
  3. Number of workers in agricultural labor force and non-agricultural labor force was calculated by multiplying the rural labor force with the percent of rural population working in agriculture sector and urban labor force with the percent of urban population working in agriculture sector and adding both of them for each province. Similarly non-agricultural labor force was computed by multiplying the rural labor force with the percent of rural population working in non-agriculture sector and urban labor force working in non-agriculture sector and adding both for each province.
  4. National output per agriculture worker and non-agricultural worker was calculated by dividing the total agricultural output by the total agricultural labor force and total non-agricultural output by the total non-agricultural labor force.
  5. Province wise agricultural out put and non agricultural output was calculated by multiplying the agricultural labor force of each province with the per capita agricultural output and non-agricultural labor force with the per capita non-agricultural output. Both agricultural and non-agricultural outputs were aggregated to get the total output for each province.
  6. Total output for each province was divided by the total population of each province to get the per capita GDP for each province for further cell output calculations.
