Reading Skills: Understanding Characters; Analyze/Evaluate

analyze- to look at or study something carefully

evaluate- to form an opinion about something

trait- ways of speaking and acting that show what someone is like

*Authors tell what characters do and say and how they solve problems.

*Readers can use information to determine characters’ traits.

*The words and actions of a character tells what kind of person he or she is.

infer- to figure out something that the author does not say

Vocabulary Strategies: Suffixes –y and –ful

Base word-a word to which prefixes and/or suffixes are added

Ex.- base word of unwholesome is whole.

Suffix-an ending that, when attached to the end of a base word, changes the meaning

of the word.

*-y and –ful are suffixes that attach to the end of a base word, changing the meaning

of the word by forming a new word.

* -y and –ful both mean “full of

Grammar: The Verb Be

Using am, is, And are

*The verb be takes different forms.

*Is, are, and am are different forms of the verb be. They tell about something that is happening now.

* Make sure the form of be agrees with the subject.

Use is with one. Ex.- The snow is falling.

Use are with more than one. Ex.- The girlsarehappy.

Use am with I. Ex.- I am warm in my coat.

Steps to Subtracting:

1. Look at the numbers in the ones place and ask yourself if you can subtract the bottom number from the top.

2. If you can, then subtract.

3. If you can’t, then go to the tens place and borrow a ten to add to your number in the ones place. If not, then subtract.

4. Subtract the ones.

5. Look at the numbers in the tens place and ask yourself if the number on the bottom is greater than the number on top.

6. If so, then go to the hundreds place and borrow a hundred to add to your number in the tens place.

6. Subtract the tens.

7. Subtract the hundreds.

Social Studies:Rosa Parks.

1. Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama.

2. When Rosa Parks was young, black and white people were segregated.

3. Rosa Parks was a seamstress.

4. "Segregated" means blacks and whites are separated.

5. Martin Luther King, Jr. worked on the boycott.

6. The bus boycott meant that African Americans would not ride on public buses.

7. On Nov. 13, 1956 the U.S. Supreme court rules that segregation on public buses was against the law.

8. The Civil Rights movement in the U.S. - the fight for rights of all people to be treated as equals - began with the arrest of Rosa Parks.

9. Rosa Parks was honored in 1996 by President Bill Clinton, who gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a citizen can receive.

10. Rosa Parks is called the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement".
