Special Education Teacher

Overview

  • Reports to the Director
  • At-will, exempt employee
  • 20 hours per week, 41 weeks per year
  • Position starts at $20,500

Position Description:

A Special EducationTeachercoordinates services for students with disabilities, monitors student progress, collaborates with other team members and provides instruction for students with disabilities, according to their goals in their IEP.

Specific Responsibilities of the Job:

Coordinate Special Education Services for each Referred Student

•Maintain student documentation in Enrich.

•Ensure MVCS compliance with relevant Special Education and Disability laws.

•Participate in referral process when necessary.

•Oversee the student’s documentation of growth in core academic areas, according to their IEP goals.

•Attend IEP meetings and help write new goals based on student logs and growth.

Monitor Student Progress

  • Fill out quarterly progress reports to document in IEP.
  • Maintain individual student logs (standardized test scores, areasof concern, recommendations for future learning and records of communication).
  • Maintain regular and meaningful contact with students, parents, and outside instructors through phone calls, email, PowerSchool and the MVCS web program.
  • Provide expertise and oversight of CAS in their subject area, planning a lesson each week that furthers student growth towards their individual goals.

Collaborate with other Learning Team Members

  • Maintain communication with Academic Advisors to review and document progress on learning goals, adjustthe PLP as needed to support the studentin achieving the learning goals, and discuss and address the student’s successes and challenges as needed.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours.

Provide Supplemental and Specialized Instruction

  • Model and provide effective strategies in learning for the SPED learner according to their disability and IEP goals.
  • Provide instruction in an individual or small-group setting.
  • Employ Special Education strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the students’ individualized education programs (IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of state, federal, and district special education/disability laws, policies, and standards.
  • Knowledge of federal and state educational requirements including the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS).
  • Understanding of traditional and alternative educational methods and approaches.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people to provide support and information.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to listen for understanding, communicate clearly and respectfully, build positive and supportive relationships, and createan environment for problem solving and working toward consensus.
  • Excellent organizational skill to write, collect, and document data and information.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Familiarity with Enrich preferred.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrate subject matter competency.
  • Elementary: successful completion of Praxis or Place test in Elementary Education
  • Secondary: successful completion of Praxis or Place test in content area (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies) OR 32college credits in content area.
  • Valid Colorado Special Education endorsement.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
