Traffic Signal Design Section Overview

The Traffic Signal Design Section is positioned within the TDOT Traffic Engineering Office under the Traffic Operations Division. The Traffic Signal Design Section is responsible for traffic signal design projects throughout the State of Tennessee which is comprised of four regions.
The Section ensures that traffic signal design and construction projects are in compliance with federal, state, regional, and local regulations. These regulations include, but not limited to, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) pedestrian and bicycle treatments, ADA standards, and roadway design guidelines.
The Section maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, programs, codes, regulations, and standards relating to traffic signals. Additional activities led by the Section include the development of traffic signal manuals, coordinating city and county traffic signal proprietary requests, and keeping staff aware of new issues, methods, equipment, trends, and advances in traffic signal technologies.

POSITION SUMMARY
TDOT Traffic Operations Division is currently seeking a Transportation Project Specialist– Senior to join our Traffic Signal Design Section. The ideal candidate for this position will apply their traffic signal design knowledge towards the preparation of in-house traffic signal design projects and the review/coordination of traffic signal design plans prepared by consultants. Other responsibilities include the supervision of other traffic signal designers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Must have working knowledge of Microstation, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Synchro, and ITE’s Traffic Engineering Handbook and Trip Generation.
  • Prepares traffic signal construction plans, specifications, and quantity estimates following TDOT guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
  • Reviews traffic signal design plans prepared by consultants and coordinates project related activities of consultant design plans.
  • Statewide travel may be required to attend project meetings, on-site meetings, training sessions, and other related meetings as needed. Must follow established safety guidelines and procedures at all times.
  • Supervises other traffic signal designers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Aptitude for maintaining a professional attitude and attention to detail while managing high volumes of projects on schedule
• Excellent technical writing skills and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational, task, and time management, deductive reasoning, and analytical skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task with attention to meeting project schedules
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and experience equivalent to five years of full-time professional civil engineering work that may include student assistant or college seasonal civil engineering work with the State of Tennessee.

Possession of a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and experience equivalent to four years of full-time professional civil engineering work.
or
Registration as a professional engineer with the State of Tennessee in either the civil engineering or structural engineering disciplines may be substituted for the required bachelor’s degree.
