SERVICE HOURS
Every Confirmation candidate must perform 15 hours of service each year of Confirmation preparation, for a total of 30 hours. Service projects must include service to the Catholic Church, community, and family. 3 hours of service in each category per year are required. 6 additional hours can be distributed to any of the three areas you wish for a total of 15 hours of service.
CATHOLIC CHURCH SERVICE
Must be done in the Catholic Church/Catholic Community!
Cannot be done in place of attending school, Sunday Mass or Religious Ed.
- Examples of Church Service:
- Serving at Masson Sundays or Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings (during Lent)
- Singing in the parish choir
- Helping with monthly food collections for Olathe Food Pantry
- Helping with preparations for Christmas & Easter Masses
- Volunteering at parish events:
- Parish Picnic, Journey, nursery, MOYC parties, fish fries, pancake breakfast, Vacation Bible School, etc.
- Assisting Religious Ed. office during K-5 class times (must be planned in advance)
- Anything that directly helps our (St. Michael) church community – many of these opportunities are on the parish website and include a sign-up genius.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Anything you can do to help your community be a better place to live.
Must be done without any financial reward/compensation for either party.
- Examples of Community Service
- Volunteering for a non- profit company (Christmas in Oct/Harvesters)
- Working at a food kitchen (St. Mary’s)
- Baby-sit for a neighbor or friend without getting paid
- Helping at your school (helping teacher after school, carnival)
- Visiting/volunteering at a nursing home
FAMILY SERVICE
Must be things above and beyond what is expected of you as member of your family.
Must be performed WITHOUT financial reward.
- Examples of Family Service
- Baby-sitting for younger siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews
- Extra yard work or house cleaning
- Cooking a meal without being asked
- Helping an elderly relative
All hours must be recorded on the Confirmation Log Sheet & have an adult signature.
SERVICE HOUR PAPER
For your paper, respond to the following:
What activities/tasks did you do to earn your service hours?
Why is service to others important?
What you learned from doing your service either about yourself or the person you helped?
What talents you have/discovered that you can share with others?
How you will continue to serve the church, community, and your family even after Confirmation?
Rules to Remember:
Paper must be done after your service hours are complete.
Paper should talk about all areas of your service.
Paper must be attached to your service hour log sheet.
Paper must be typed.
Paper & service hours must be finished and turned in to Jordan + Kevin by:
Wednesday, March 7 at EDGE.
