Year 3 Autumn 2

Literacy
Our Literacy units this half term will beMyths and fables and Reports. We will also be focusing on usingcomplex sentences in our writing, using inverted commas correctly and organising information into subheadings.
Each week you will be set a piece of homework to support the previous week’s learning. This homework may be sent home in the homework folders, posted on the blog or be available on ‘I am learning’.


You will also be expected to practice your weekly spellings, read your reading book daily, complete activities in your reading diary andcontribute to our class blog. / Maths
In Maths this half term we will be focusing onrecalling and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4, and 8 multiplication tables, mentally adding and subtracting ones, tens and hundreds from 3 digit numbers, Recognising and using fractions as numbers learning, Measuring, comparing, adding and subtracting lengths, mass and volume and measuring the perimeter of simple 2D shapesWe will also be learning to apply and use our knowledge in different ways.

Science
Our Science unit this half term is called ‘The power of force?’
We willexplore how well an object moves on different surfaces and group materials into the categories magnetic and non magnetic.We will observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others and compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materials. We will describe magnets as having two poles and predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing.

/ Topic
Our Topic this half term is Ancient Egyptians. Wewill learn when the Ancient Egyptians ruled and will know when different Egyptian pharaohs ruled and state the order. We will research life as an Egyptian and state 3 key facts then compare Egyptian entertainment with modern day entertainment and present findings using secondary resources. We will also look at Egyptian hieroglyphics.
We will finish our topic with an Egyptian day. Please start thinking about your Egyptian costume as all children will be expected to dress up for this.

PSHE:Our SEAL unit this half term is Getting on. We will learn to talk about issues that affect me and society, and give my opinions.We will learn what different jobs bring to society and what part we might play in our community.We will learn thatpeople can become stressed and what can be done to keep healthy and calm.
You will be set a piece of SEAL homework in Week 6. This will be posted on the class blog.
Computing: Our unit this half term is‘I am a presenter’ We will be learning to carry out research for a presentation in teams and presenting this in different ways using a range of Ipad apps.
SMSC:Our SMSC unit this half term will beChristmas Welearn about the significance of angels in the Christmas story. We will find outabout the birth of John the Baptist and the events in the birth of Jesus. The children look for similaritiesbetween the two stories.

Music:We will be learning how to play the recorder with Mr Newman.

PE:Our PE units this half term will be Invasion games with Mr Burgess and swimming.
