About the Soloists

Blake Hansen, piano

Blake is a junior music major and a frequent performer at Music at Davis on both piano and violin. Blake has also performed with the San Jacinto College Concert Band, and is currently a piano student of Marie Jureit-Beamish.

Michael McMullin, Baritone

Michael earned his bachelor’s degree from Principia in music, where he studied voice with Robert Rockabrand. He has appeared at the Alton Little Theatre and in solo performances in the area, and is a regular soloist at the First Church of Christ Scientist, Elsah. He teaches at Principia Middle School.

Gwyneth Ochs, Mezzo-Soprano

Gwyn is a senior art major, and has sung in auditioned choirs since she was very young. She has sung in Principia College choir during her four years, and is a voice student of Sara Rockabrand.

Marc Schapman, Tenor

Marc has a doctorate in vocal performance from the University of Indiana, has premiered several operatic roles, and is currently competing in the local Metropolitan Opera auditions. He teaches voice and is the director of the opera workshop at SIUE, and coaches voice for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis training program.

Philip Siegling, Baritone

Philip has sung roles with several opera companies, including Opera Colorado and San Francisco Opera. He has also been a regular soloist in Christian Science Churches, and is currently a staff member at Principia College.

Elanor Stevens, Mezzo-Soprano

Ellie graduated from Principia College in 2009 with a degree in biology, and also has a deep commitment to music, which she shared with the community through her voice recital last year as a student of Sara Rockabrand. She is currently a post-graduate intern in the biology department, and continues to sing in the College choir.

Katlyn Straub, Soprano

Katlyn is a sophomore political science/Spanish major, and has participated in honors choirs throughout the Northwest. She has sung in the Principia College Choir for two years, and studies voice with Sara Rockabrand.

Emily Truckenbrod, Soprano

Emily has a DMA in vocal performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa, and has sung extensively throughout the Midwest in both opera and concert settings. She also performs new music of contemporary composers regularly. She currently teaches voice and vocal repertoire and pedagogy classes at SIUE.

Program Notes

Handel’s Messiah has the distinction of being the most performed choral masterpiece in the Western world since its debut in 1742. Although Handel composed two dozen oratorios during his long and illustrious career, Messiah is the only one that draws texts from both the Old and the New Testaments. An oratorio is a dramatic work, much like an unstaged opera, that tells a story through vocal solos, choruses, and orchestral sections. The text for Messiah was constructed by Charles Jennens, a wealthy country squire, who had provided Handel with a number of oratorio librettos over the years. Handel was obviously so inspired by the combination of prophecy and fulfillment, that he worked with a profound spiritual involvement, completing the entire work in just 24 days.

The oratorio consists of three parts: Promise and Incarnation (the Christmas portion); Passion, Resurrection and Ascension (the Easter portion) and a Hymn on Thanksgiving. A performance of the complete work takes close to three hours. This evening we are presenting all of Part I, with the addition of “Hallelujah,” which closes Part II. Upon completing this great chorus, Handel told a friend: “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God himself.” It is this quality of inspiration that makes Messiah the most loved and enduring choral work of all time.
