Goals: The mission of the UNCA Department of Music is to explore the many connections and interactions between music and all facets of human life and culture through instruction and performance. We seek to:

• promote music as an integral component in UNCA’s liberal arts curriculum;

• provide high-quality preparation for students seeking careers in the music profession;

• provide opportunities for self-expression and personal growth through participation in music;

• enrich the cultural life of the University and the community.

In keeping with this mission this course aims to acquaint you with the basic styles and developments in Western music up to the middle of the 17th century. We will attempt to discover links with the major artistic trends that you have studied in Humanities and to show how music has helped shape some of those movements. We will accomplish these goals by critically listening to examples of music.
