Museum Object Loans Boxes

These boxes have original and replica objects, documents and resources to use in the classroom, to aid with themed lessons. If you are planning to cover these themes and visit the museum then a box is a perfect introduction to the topic, or as a way of reinforcing learning. All loans boxes come with a resource pack.

In Our Shoes

Students use footwear spanning time and cultures to explore the influence of fashion, occupation, status, wealth, climate and technology on shoe design and manufacture. They will then be able to build up a picture of the life of the characters that wore the shoes and present them in a catwalk show.

Shoe Chests

Inspired by shoes from Northampton’s Designated Shoe Collection this resource has three vintage chests, each one containing either men’s, women’s or children’s shoes. Each shoe is individually packaged to reflect its significance and history.

Toys

With replica and original modern and Victorian toys looking at both mass-produced and home made examples. The box includes home made whip and top and skipping rope; teddy bear, Russian dolls, swing toy.

Wooden Toys – Mini box

What kinds of toys did children play with in the past? From swing toys to cup and balls, all the toys in the box can be played with (under supervision), giving children the chance to find out what is different about the toys compared to their toys today.

The Victorian Child

Suitable for teaching students about the life of a child in Victorian Britain. This box contains replica and original items including slates, slate pencils, good behaviour medal, flat caps, mop caps, school bell.

The Victorian Home

Suitable for teaching aboutsanitation, household chores and lighting in Victorian homes. This box has replica and original items including box iron, potty, food tin, scrubbing brush, soap and candle holder.

The Second World War - Evacuee Suitcase.

Using a suitcase with items that a child would have packed during evacuation, students will gain valuable insight into how difficult it was for children during the war years.

Second World War - The Home Front

With original objects from the 1940s, use this box and suggested activities to enable students to learn about real people and their experiences.

Second World War – Soldier

This box contains all the kit and uniform that a soldier during the Second World War would have worn. Students can try on the uniform and learn about how difficult it was for soldiers. They may also make comparisons with soldiers fighting in wars today.

World Culture Boxes

Each of the three boxescan be used independently with objects from a wide geographical spread; Asia Oceania, Australia Africa and North and South America.

Medicine Through Time

Students will have the chance to see, touch and investigate the objects that changed medical history - a powerful learning tool for tactile and kinaesthetic learners. The box contains a selection of original medical objects, timeline with magnetic dates and facts, set of laminated copies of original documents.

Boxes are available to hire for up to half a term at a time, approximately 6 weeks.

Cost: Standard box: £55; Mini box: £25

Payment of your box:Northampton Borough Council will invoice your school.

Boxes are collectedby special arrangement with an Education Officer.
