Mural Design, Fabrication and Installation along the

Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway

The Dorchester County Tourism Department is seeking proposals from experiencedartistsfor the design and execution of amuralon the wall of visitor center restroom at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge, Md.

This project is part of a heritage mural corridor featuring up to 8murals along the route of the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway in Dorchester Counties.The murals will reflect Chesapeake themes, including agriculture, working the water, crabs, oysters, waterfowl, history, and the natural landscape. The purpose of the muralsis to display a historical snapshot of the community that will engage travelers and enhance their appreciation of qualities that make Chesapeake Country unique.

We are seeking an experienced artist/muralist to design, create, and install one mural at this time. Biddersmayassume this mural will be produced in your studio on HardieBoard®(or similar product) and installed on a frame at the location. Bidders willsuggest the appropriate preparation of the space, which includes openings for the window and vent, and submittwo design concepts. The bid should include the artist fee, site preparation costs, supplies and materials, any travel-related expenses, and associated costs. Once hired, the mural artist will prepare a detaileddesign/install packet which must be acceptable tothe property owner and Dorchester Tourism.

Mural Content and Resources

The mural’s final design should be consistent with the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan and embody its guiding principles into a visually attractive design that:

1) Evokes the qualities of the Chesapeake landscape

2) Promotes further byway exploration by visitors

3) Reflects the authenticity of Chesapeake life in communities, landscapes, and resources.

TheMichener Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway“weaves together the multifaceted layers of nationally significant maritime and agricultural heritage – from Native Americans to the modern era – reflecting the distinct sense of time and place as captured in James Michener’s novel Chesapeake.” The Byway through the heart of Maryland’s Eastern Shore serves as the main route of heritage tourism, to help travelers find and enjoy distinctive destinations and beautiful places unique to the Chesapeake Bay.

Project

1. The mural will be located on the bathroom wall facing the “sail” located at the Sailwinds Visitor Center in Cambridge, MD.

2. The bid should include all associated costs including the artist fee, site preparation, supplies, and any travel-related expenses.

3. The artist will need to ascertain the exact measurements and square footage of the wall, but it is estimated to be 33’4” long x 11’1” high on the restroom building. Mural must allow for window and cooling vent.

4. The artist will be required to install a framework on which to mount the mural on the building.

5. The proposed designs will undergo review and approval by the property owner, representatives of sponsoring entities and/or a mural committee. Revised drawings may be needed before a final design is approved.

6. The artist will need to include recommendations for a suggested treatment of branding this mural as part of the series of Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway murals. Some type of acknowledgement of the National Scenic Byways Program, and/or sponsor logo(s), may need to be considered as well.

7. All rights and materials will become the property of Dorchester County Tourism. At the project’s conclusion, the artist/designer will deliver design and production files, as well as completed digital files for office use, in the form of two CDs in PDF format.

8. After being hired, the artist may be asked to present a design package for project sponsors and members of the community.

1. A brief narrative and two concept drawings, including suggested media and colors, and approximate dimensions to convey artistic intent, style of work, etc..
