Professional Training Programmes in Educational Psychology
EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The British Psychological Service guidelines on the evaluation of initial training courses say: "the course should have an Advisory Committee to advise on all aspects of the course which the course tutor should chair; on which trainees, educational psychologists from the region and academic staff are represented. It should meet regularly and at least once a year". (BPS, 1994. Para 2,9)

UCL Concept

The Advisory Committee should provide a forum for communication between representatives of our customers and representatives of the course team.

Committee Composition

Customers: / People we train
An EPiT representative from each of the last three years.
Two graduates from the part-time DEdPsy, each to serve for a 2 year period from graduating
People who employ the people we train
Two of the four PEPs whose services are linked with the course.
Senior LEA Officers responsible for the management of Educational Psychology Services
People who represent the clients of the people we train
Representatives of Parents Groups or Voluntary Organisations.
People who work in Partnership with the people we train
Representatives of Headteachers and others with whom the people we train
work to promote children's learning and development.
Course Team: / Course Director
Academic Tutor Representative
Professional Tutor Representative
Tutor for the part-time DEdPsy

Frequency and Length of Meetings: Twice a year for 1 - 1½ hours.

Commitment: 2 or 3 years (staggered to avoid everyone changing at the same time.)

Remit of the Committee

To obtain comment on the course from the customer's perspectives, the changes they would like to see and aspects of the course which in their opinion are working well. Their key role would be one of evaluation although they would also have a proactive role in identifying and advising on needs. We in turn would be providing them with regular information about the course and any proposed changes.

Specific areas the Committee should keep under review:

1. / Recruitment & Selection to the MSc and DEdPsy / 5. / Pastoral & Tutorial Support
2. / Aims & Curriculum of the courses / 6. / Funding Issues
3. / Curriculum Implementation for each programme / 7. / Development of the 3 year Training Programme
4. / Assessment of Learning & Evaluation of Teaching / 8. / Certificated CPD programmes for Supervisors.
