What is Respiration?

In biology, the word respiration is used in two slightly different ways. At the cellular level, respiration is defined as the release of energy from the breakdown of food molecules in the presence of oxygen. Without oxygen, cells lose their ability to produce ATP. Without ATP, cells cannot do any of the jobs necessary to support life.

The Human Respiratory System is the organ system used to obtain the oxygen needed by cells, and to release the carbon dioxide produced as waste by cells. The exchange, or movement, of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the body is also known as respiration.

With each breath, air enters the body through the mouth and nose, and then fills up the lungs where the movement, or exchange, of gases takes place.

The respiratory system is an organ system. Organ systems are made of 2 or more organs that work together to perform a job. The job of the respiratory system is to bring about the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas. The organs involved in this organ system are the nose, mouth, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm.

Respiration in organisms:

Once respiration in organisms takes place, CELLULAR RESPIRATION follows in the cells.

  • The human respiratory system picks up ______from the air we INHALE and releases ______in the air we exhale
