Class Rules:Consequences:

Actively listen & follow directions. 2nd offense: Parent contact by teacher

Follow all school policies 3rd offense: Incident Report/Administration Involvement

Classroom Goal:

I believe all students have the ability to shape their own lives and society in positive ways. My goal this year is to have all students recognize their power and use that power to improve themselves and their communities. We will use our studies of the English language and American literature to inform students’ vision and to increase their ability to make that vision a reality.

In order to achieve this goal, we will need supplies, organization and procedures. These are outlined below.

Materials for class: Every day you need to bring the follow items with you:

*highly recommended: USB Flash Drive to save work at school and at home.

1 Composition Notebook (for in-class journal/bellwork) *To be kept in class. No spiral bound notebooks.

Any sized 3 ring binder

Loose leaf paper

Writing utensils (Blue or Black ink/pencils/highlighters)

Dividers with the following four sections: Literature Notes & Annotations; Grammar; Vocabulary; Journals

**** If there is any difficulty obtaining these supplies, students may see me outside of class time to obtain used supplies in good condition. They are free of charge while supplies last!****

Bell work: At the beginning of every class, find your assigned seat, and immediately begin work on the bell work. This assignment will be posted on the board/overhead with specific instructions. Failure to complete the work during the bell work window may result in a zero for your bell work/participation grade. You will need to have a composition notebook which you will leave in a designated place in the classroom. This will be your class journal and where you will write the bell work. You will receive a weekly grade for this work which is part of your participation grade.

Turning in homework/late-work: When homework assignments are due you need to place your homework in the designated box while entering the class, before you sit down. If you have missed an assignment, you must email a request for your late work, preferably the day you are out so I can respond as quickly as possible. Please do not request work during class time. Work request tickets can be filled out upon your return with an explanation of when you were out and your agreement to complete the work within the designated time frame. Make-up work must be turned in within 5 days of the original due date. Major projects and papers may NOT be turned in late. If you are going to be absent you need to make arrangements to get the work turned in on time. Assignments that were due the date you were out are due the first day that you return. If there is an unforeseen emergency, please contact me or your guidance counselor ASAP.

Grading Policy:

The school’s grading scale will be used

A100-93 Tests/Projects/Major Papers: 40%

B92-85Quizzes: 30%

C84-77Participation/Bellwork /Classwork/: 15%

D76-70Homework: 15%

F69-0 *Work is graded on the total out of one hundred percent.

Any work that you do while in class will be graded at random. This can include bell work for a specific day, notes, work sheets, writing assignments, or participation in a class activity. This means that if you were in class that day and don’t do your work you will not be given an opportunity to re-do the assignment. It is your responsibility to do your work when it is due. If you don’t participate or do the assignment then you must take a zero. If you refuse to read while in class that is considered in your participation grade.

Powerschool & Grades: Progress reports will go home every three weeks. Ms. Peck keeps grades on paper in a grade book and then enters them all every other week. It is your responsibility to make sure you have access to powerschool and to regularly check your grades. If you need a password reset you can go to student services. If you ever have a specific question about a grade, please email me so that I may respond to you. It is not okay to be disrespectful or irate in class if you have an issue. Again, please bring grade issues to my attention in either an email or in an individual conference. (NOT DURING CLASS!)

Absence/late arrival: Please be seated and ready to begin at the appropriate time. If you are late, the school tardy policy will apply and you will be responsible for emailing to request your work or checking the class pbworks page for assignments.

Leaving the classroom: Do not ask me upon entering the room! You cannot leave the room for the first or last ten minutes of class. Student must ask to leave the room before leaving. If not, you will receive a write up for skipping. This does include sneaking out the door early. Only one student can be out of the room at a time. Please fill out your pass once you are granted permission and bring it to me to sign. Misuse of passes will result in a loss of privileges for that student.

Obtaining help/contributing to class discussions: Raise your hand and I will help you. Also, please do not shout over others or use obscene language. Profanity will not be tolerated. Everyone has a right to be heard, not just you. We will practice our procedures for having a class discussion.

Attention during presentations or teacher instructions: While a student, another adult, or I am speaking to the class, please put your electronic devices away, clear your desk, and look at the speaker. *Non-related materials: completing make-up work or any other materials not related to the class is not allowed.

Where to find assignments: see the board for homework assignments posted for that day. Everyday an agenda is posted under today’s date. You can also go to epeckkhs.pbworks.com and print your own copy of the calendar!

Homework and assignments must be legible and neat to be counted as complete. Use loose-leaf paper; paper torn out or with ragged edges will not be accepted. All long-term papers and assignments must be typed and printed. Any assignment two pages or more must be stapled before it is turned in. All work must have the proper heading. Work that is repeatedly turned in incorrectly will have points deducted.

Communication: The best way to reach me is email and early in the morning. Ms.Peck will be using the following methods to communicate with students and/or parents:

*This is not a real phone number. Remind can only be used to send reminders one way from the teacher. Students cannot text teacher or “reply.”

Promises to students:

* If you ever feel I am doing a poor job of living up to these promises, please schedule an individual conference with me. I work very hard to make sure that I am true to my word.

I will always believe in your ability to succeed. This means my expectations are extremely high. I will demand your best at all times. I will tell you when I think we need a new strategy for you to succeed.

I will listen to you. I ask that you bring questions, concerns or comments to me in a calm, respectful manner at the appropriate time. Individual concerns should be addressed in individual conferences that can be arranged by seeing me before or after class.

I will respect you, and I will insist that others respect you in our class. Please let me know, in an individual conference, if you ever feel disrespected, bullied, or upset.

I will never assign work unless I can explain why it is important. I do not believe in busy work. I will value your time in my class. Please show me that you value your time to learn in my class as well.

I will work hard for you. You are my students. I will stand up for you. I will make every effort to have fun and learn at the same time.

I will learn from you. You are smart people, and each of you brings experiences and perspectives to the class that will benefit the group. Please share your viewpoint every day!

A few final comments…

-Wait to be excused by the teacher, not the bell. DO NOT line-up at the door! You must remain in your seat until the bell.

-Respect the rights of others by conducting yourself in a manner that creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning.

-Please DO NOT touch any materials on my desk, the board or the front overhead, unless you ask permission first. Please respect my small corner of space and don’t go behind my desk. There are materials available for your use on the class work table/book shelf and also the supply closet.

Learner’s Creed:

I believe in myself and my ability to do my best at all times. Because I am responsible for my life and for all my actions:

I will listen,

I will see,

I will speak,

I will feel,

I will think,

I will reason,

I will read,

I will write.

I will do all these things with one purpose in mind: To do my best and not to waste this day for this day will come no more.
