Class Website:

Welcome to Math I! I am excited to start a new semester and am looking forward to working with you. I have high expectations for all of my students. I truly believe that all students can succeed in this class. You will need to check your edmodo account every day after 11:00 am to see if there are any updates or additional assignments. The codeto get in your class is: 5wmtqg. Parents can also have access. You can find your parent code on the right hand side of the screen once your child is logged in.

It is your responsibility to seek help when you feel it is needed. Remember, asking questions is how you learn and there is no question too basic or trivial.

Materials needed for this class include:

  • 3 ring binder
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Pencils

It is highly recommended to have:

  • Graphing Calculator (preferably a TI 84 Plus or TI 84 Plus Silver Edition)

Grading Policy:

All grades for the class will be averaged together as follows:

Homework/Class Work/Daily Grades will count as one grade.

Quizzes will count as two grades.

Each chapter test will count as three grades.

Homework:

Homework and class work are an important aspect of this course and will be graded in one of the following ways:

1) Effort Grade: The student will receive a grade based on the number of homework problems which were attempted. Work must be shown for each problem including an attempted solution before credit will be given.

2) Accuracy Grade: The student will receive a grade based on the number of problems he/she has worked correctly. I reserve the right to grade the entire paper or to choose certain homework problems from an assignment to check for accuracy.

No advance warning will be given on method of grading for a particular assignment; therefore, always do your best on all assignments.

ALEKS Notebook=Weekly Quiz Grade

  • You will be required to have an ALEKS notebook.
  • Each day of work in ALEKS needs to be recorded and dated in the notebook.
  • A certain amount of hours MUST be logged in ALEKS.

***NOTE: Work must always be shown unless otherwise stated. If you do not show work, you will not receive credit***

Missed Homework, Quizzes and Tests due to Absences:

Homework is considered late if it is not turned in at the time of request. Work is NOT accepted after the day it is due unless you are absent. If you are absent, you are responsible for getting missed assignments from the assignment board and completing them within 3 days for credit. If you miss a quiz or test, you must make it up within one week of your date of return. It is your responsibility to obtain your missed assignments and complete them in a timely manner.

Extra Help:

I am available for help Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after school until 2:45, with few exceptions. The math club, Mu Alpha Theta, also provides an excellent source for free after school math tutoring until 3:30 on Thursdays. The location for Mu Alpha Theta tutoring each week will be posted in my classroom as well as around the school. The tutoring program will begin a few weeks into the semester. Remember, it is your responsibility to seek help when you feel it is needed.

Benchmark Assessments:

At the end of the 6th and 12th weeks each student will take a benchmark assessment. These tests will be cumulative and will be used to assess student knowledge and mastery as well as to prepare them for the final exam.

Common Core Math I Final Exam:

This course will have a final exam at the close of our semester. This exam is very important and will be worth 25% of your final grade.

Parent Involvement:

Parents, you are the most valuable tool I have in educating your child. There are several ways you can help your child be successful in this course.

1. Make time each day to ask your child what they did in class.

  1. Make sure your child studies eachnight. If they finished their work in class, they should study their notes.
  2. If your child has problems with the homework, have them read over their notes.
  3. Encourage your child to get a study partner who is taking this class or has already taken the class.
  4. If your child still does not understand the homework, encourage them to see me for help before or after school the next day.
  5. Stress the importance of a good education.

I will be sending reports to keep you updated on your child’s progress. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am looking forward to a great semester.

Thank You,

Melissa Sharpe
