Syllabus

Course Description:

This course introduces the basic tools, techniques and vocabulary of Broadcast Journalism. The focus is on broadcast news history, writing, research, reporting as well as the technical aspects behind the production process. Students will write on a daily basis which includes informal writing in response to readings, and formal writing.Students will be taught the skills of story selection, news writing and delivery in the television news industry. Students will be expected to interact through participation in whole class discussions of news topics, working in small groups, and informally assisting one another in various technical assignments. This course will prepare students for aspects of television production.

Course Objectives:

In this course students will:

  • study the history and major developments of broadcast communication
  • explore the processes through which news is gathered and prepared for reporting for broadcast.
  • become familiar with the news broadcasting process and technical production.
  • have the opportunity to put into practice the core elements of videography and editing
  • learn the fundamentals of editing

Class Fee:

Each student is required to pay a $20.00 lab fee that will be used forequipment maintenance and technical supplies. This fee is due by Friday September 4th, 2015. Failure to do so will result in a financial obligation.

  • Flash drive
  • Composition Notebook (journal)
  • You must bring a pencil or pen, and paper to every class
  • On occasion, you may need to bring items from home for a particular production

Grading:

Your graded work will be broken up into the categories listed below:

  • Projects = 40% percent
  • Tests = 25%
  • Participation = 15%
  • Assignments = 10%
  • Quiz = 10%

Class Rules:

  • Come to class every day prepared and on time
  • Meet all deadlines for class work and homework
  • Be polite and supportive to classmates at all times
  • Mishandling or destruction of equipment will not be tolerated
  • Inappropriate conduct during a video shoot in or outside of the classroom is unacceptable
