”Crawford’s Crew” of 5th graders- 2017-2018

Dear Parents,

The 5th grade students were given new usernames and passwords to log in on the computers in the classroom and in the technology lab. It also allows them to use Microsoft 365 which gives them access to Word, Excel, and Power Point, and email. Some perks to this is that students’ work is automatically saved, and they can share their work with others. I even received a couple of shared grandparent essays that I edited so students could make revisions. This past week students used Word from Microsoft 365 for SSEP proposals, grandparent essays, and for their social studies projects. Students can access this from the school’s web page at .

ACADEMIC SUBJECTS:

Theology: Students will complete the performance tasks this week. The task asks students to create an infographic of the resurrection of the body of Jesus. The role of each student is as if they are an intern at St. Mary’s Press publisher company. The challenge for the students is to design a colorful, well-informed infographic about the resurrection of the body of Jesus for the new edition of The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth.Students will also have atrium this week with Mrs. Schmidtendorff. She will present the 1st moment of The Gifts of God. This presentation is divided into 2 visits. Its aim is to initiate thought and wonderment of God's creation;how HE created it and the wonderful gifts HE provides for us in variety and abundance. It also helps the us to realize that this history of salvation is continuing and that we have a place in it. We recognize all the gifts of God ...including the gift of our own lives! This work includes an amazing "treasure box" of materials that help us identify some of the gifts. From the beginning of time, God had a plan which included the creation of the heavens & the earth and all that they contain... Prepared for all the world like a 'banquet' spread out for us all!

Reading: We will be reading a non-fiction piece in the text this week. It is from lesson 6- Quest for the Tree Kangaroo. We started with vocabulary last week. One focus for this lesson is being able to identify synonyms and antonyms of words. This will help students grow in their vocabulary usage and in developing their word choice in writing. The website for the textbook is Once you get to this site you may need to add information in to access the book. The district is the Diocese of Kalamazoo. I then saved this as my one of myfavorites, so I didn’t have to do this each time to access the textbook. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Science: Earth science will be our focus in science the next few weeks. We will begin unit four, lesson 2 on why the sun is brighter than the other stars.

Math: Exponents and the distributive property will be addressed again this week. Students will be doing a couple of hands-on activities to help further understanding of these concepts. They will also be multiplying by one-digit numbers, and multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers.

Social Studies: Students will continue to work on their Native American project in class. If you have not heard from your child about this project, her is the link with the information they received. Native_American_Project.docx .It can also be found under file manager on my web page. This is an in-class project. The plan is to start presenting on November 9th.

ELA: We will continue working on nouns used as subjects and subject complements. Students will receive a handout of common prepositions and how these are used in prepositional phrases. This will be helpful when we decide if a noun is a direct object or the object of a prepositional phrase. One area of writing that we have been focusing on is word choice. Students are using various sources to change at least five words within their writing. Another area we will work on this quarter is transition sentences from one paragraph to the next.

5th grade happenings:
