Biography- Marissa Bloom

Soprano Marissa Bloom is known for her extraordinary dramatic presence, comedic timing, and rich vocal quality. Heralded as the “Lucille Ball” of the opera world, Marissa Bloom thrives in contemporary American comic roles. Her performances of Julia Child in Bon Appètitand Mrs. Clancy in The Italian Lesson with the Napa Music Festival were a triumph of vocal strength and characterization. She has also performed the roles of Antonia’s Mother in Les Contes d’Hoffmannand Florence in Albert Herring during her summers with the Napa Music Festival. Currently, Marissa Bloom is a resident artist with Opera San Luis Obispo: performing at various outreach events and directing the annual Children’s Opera Camp. She has also been a featured soloist with Symphony of the Vines and the New World Baroque Orchestra. While performing in both the recital and operatic capacity with these and other companies, Ms. Bloom studies with Juliana Gondek and Rakefet Hak of UCLA. Marissa has also studied with Jacalyn Kreitzer of Los Osos, California, Dr. Hope Koehler of West VirginiaUniversity, and Peter Lightfoot of University of Southern California. During fulfilment of her graduate degree, Ms. Bloom was the Assistant Opera Director at West VirginiaUniversityunder the direction of Robert Thieme where she also performed the role of Alma in Lee Hoiby’s Summer and Smoke. Ms. Bloom received her B.M. of Vocal Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Southern California where she made her operatic debut as The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors. Her numerous self-produced recital performances throughout Californiahave earned her great acclaim for her dramatic interpretations and fondness for lesser-known vocal works. A proponent of physical health and music education, Marissa Bloomruns both a yoga studio and a voice studio where she teaches a full-bodied approach to singing--incorporating yoga postures and breathing techniques into her training.
