Continue with recorded lesson on learning melody of Kanon by Mozart. Have students find the examples of motif similar to one in Beethoven’s 5th. Listen to the selection. Learn the symbols for whole, half, quarter & eight rests; use worksheet to evaluate. / Review; play one of the three sections of Go now in Peace, p.34 on piano for grade. Try to play melody on handchimes along with recording.
Discuss pictures, p. 40-41.
Read p. 42; keeping steady beat in 2/2 time by using pat-slide, listen to Cripple Creek. Listen to Cripple Creek version 2, identifying the change in tempo (faster). / Take written test on 2nd string notes.
Review pick-up notes, p. 13, and continue with When the Saints Go Marching In; continue with “Extra Exercises”. Learn D5 power Chord.

Planning & Lunch / Continue with Autumn, p. 36-37, discussing contrast. Compare melody & descant, looking for contrast. Ask why legato rather than staccato was a better choice for a song about Autumn. (represents the floating of leaves). / Review how to label form, and why Cripple Creek is AB form. Have students listen for order of verse, refrain & instrumental or other sounds.
Introduce 16th notes on p.44-45. Have students contrast the steady beat with the melodic rhythm of Sinner Man. After asking class where they originated, read about spirituals. / Review p.13, When The Saints…, playing the recording - listening to whole song, student part, accomp. part, whole song again (focus on meas. 9-11), gradually increasing speed.

Substitute an appropriate 3 syllable replacement for x x x, and have students say a different one for each verse, during with a 2nd listen. / Listen to The Entertainer, p.48-49, for steady beat, and then melody (see sidebars). Read about Scott Joplin. Have students play on sound shapes the rhythms on p. 50 top, then bottom. Play for a grade two bottom rhythms, with at least one containing 16th notes. / Learn notes on p.14 (G & A on 3rd string). If time, begin Oh Susanna, p. 15 playing the recording - listening to whole song, student part, accomp. part, whole song again. Have students copy from board definitions of flat, sharp, natural, double sharp & double flat, as well as drawn symbols. Apply to piano (ShaRp Raises to Right; FLat Lowers to Left). Have students individually play examples of naturals, sharps and flats on piano. / Do rhythm challenge on p. 52 using 4 squares in a line. Introduce harmony through partner songs, p.53.
Begin discussing the process of creating triads on board. Play a handchime accompaniment to songs on p. 53 with CD. / Continue with learning 5th line of Oh Susanna (eventually for playing test). Review When the Saints & Mary Ann, p. 12-13 / Tanner G-solo
