What is Advocacy?

An advocate is a person who supports or promotes the interests of another, and that is what a teacher is doing when he or she works to engage students and their parents as partners in a positive, learning-focused classroom community. In our advocacy classes we will focus on social emotional learning and academic goal setting.

Food

- SNACK Please send your child to school with a snack and make sure it does not have to be heated up. Healthy snacks help them and us.

-LUNCH Make sure your child has enough food, reheat only please, reusable utensils, plates, and tupperware.

-DRINKS Water bottles during class and other drinks only during lunch.

-No sharing food.

Birthdays

-Send invitations to school and have your child give them to me so I can put them into Friday Folders. It would be easier if it was an evite and I could forward it to the kid’s parents. Up to you and your child.

-When your child has their birthday they can bring in treats for our homeroom (25 kids) and extra if they want to give some to the teachers. If you will be joining us, then please bring in the treats. If you can’t make it send them with your child and I’ll keep them safe. Please do not bring extra for kids in other classes. This isn’t fair to all the other kids in that class. We will sing happy birthday and celebrate their special day and if you want to join us you’re more than welcome to. We will be celebrating birthdays from 12:45 - 1:05. Please come at 12:40 and try not to be late. Please let me know before the day so I can prepare. Make sure you check in at the front desk. Treats have to be prepackaged and have the ingredients on the package due to allergy concerns. If your child has food allergies, please send in special treats asap that I will give them when we have birthdays. Feel free to bring something healthy.

Scooters

If your child wants to bring a scooter, they also need a helmet. We’d love it if the scooter could stay all week at school.

Friday Folders

Please go through the folder with your child and make sure they bring it back empty on Monday.

Field Trip

We take one or two field trips. If you know of any free or inexpensive programs that would come to Westgate, please email me. If you want to chaperone, please check the box on the permission slip. You have to do the background check before you can chaperone. We’ll randomly pick chaperones if we have more than needed.

Volunteers

-The whole school needs volunteers

-Not just in the classroom

-If you’re interested in volunteering or chaperoning please fill out the paperwork and this year we’re doing background checks. Once you’ve been approved, then I’ll contact you if I need help. You can also email me and let me know if you are available.

Class Management

I talk to the kid first. If the behavior continues and prevents other kids from learning or is holding themselves back, then I’ll email you. We’re on the same side. If I email you, it’s because I feel like it’s really important, I need your help, and because I want tohelp your child do their best.
