ALAN P GRAHAM MBE
Alan Graham started his career in banking in 1967 with NM Rothschild & Sons Ltd on the Sterling Money Market, becoming Manager of the Foreign Exchange Section before moving to New York in 1977 to start up the then new, wholly-owned bullion trading subsidiary, NMR Metals Inc. as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. In 1980 he returned to the International Banking Division in London and in 1983 became Executive Director and Head of Banking and Treasury Division at NMR Guernsey.
Upon his return to London in 1988, he was appointed a Main Board Director of N M Rothschild & Sons and became Head of Treasury Operations Division, where he was responsible for evaluating, implementing and managing new Treasury operations systems, and upgrading Trading Limits and Risk Assessment procedures. In 1992, he moved to Singapore where he became Managing Director of the bank’s operations in the South East Asia region, and returned to London in 1995, to take up the position of UK Group Company Secretary. He retired in 2004.
He holds positions as a Non-Executive Director, and Chairman of the Audit Committee, of the Serious Fraud Office, Chairman of the Audit Committee of the National Fraud Authority, Non-Executive Director of the John Street Group of Companies Ltd. and PC Heart Limited, Chairman of the Board of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, a Member of the Standards Committee of the City of London Corporation and a Director and Trustee of the Charity Bank, where he also chairs the Audit Committee.
Alan is a member of the Guild of Freeman of the City of London, the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Institute of Directors.
He is extensively involved in the charitable sector, and has raised over £80,000 for charitable causes by running in international City Marathons, including London, New York and Boston. Apart from his involvement with the MND Association in the UK, he is a Director of the International Alliance of MND/ALS Associations and a Trustee of other UK charities. He is a member of the Council of the United Synagogue. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of the University of Hertfordshire in 2004.
Alan is married to Jennifer, a Magistrate on the West Hertfordshire bench, and has two adult daughters, one a Freelance Journalist and Sub-Editor, the other a Primary School Teacher, now living and working for a UK Development Agency in Africa.
Alan was awarded an MBE in the Birthday Honours List 2011, for services to the Voluntary Sector.
