Daughter’s Father: The Study of Personal and Political in Pakistani Political Autogynographies

The present research study has been conducted on two Pakistani autogynographies, Daughter of the East (1989) written by Benazir Bhutto and Songs of blood and sword: A daughter’s memoir (2011) written by Fatima Bhutto, to examine how two narrators have constructed their personal identity in relation to their fathers’ political achievements while defending their (fathers’) vulnerable political image. Textual analysis has been used as a research method to interpret and analyze the text with the help of extra-textual knowledge such as historical and cross references, feminist perspectives, narrative strategies and secondary resources. The selected texts merely gives the impression that they are nothing more than the hymn of a father but the study revealed the ways in which the two daughters are politically conscious of their independent political position in the family as well as in the country’s politics. The research findings guide that though the daughters idealize their fathers but they do not construct their identity completely subservient to them. Benazir criticizes Zia for her father’s hanging meanwhile her niece Fatima launches a long diatribe against Benazir for her father’s killing during her government.
