SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer school is provided here at Garden Oaks for students who are recommended by their teacher or required to attend in order to meet promotion standards for the next grade level. Free breakfast is provided for all students in summer school.

Starting in 3rd grade, students in HISD must pass the STAAR test in order to move to the next grade level. Additionally, students in first and second grade must know the grade level High Frequency Words to go to the next grade level. Of course, passing grades and school attendance are also required. Extended care will only be provided if more than 20 students are in need of this service. This service will be provided for a fee if enough students sign-up. If you have any question whether or not your child will be required to attend, see your teacher or contact me directly.

Moving Up Night/STEM and GT

This Thursday is our annual Moving Up Night. This is especially important for parents and students who are moving to the next level (Kinder, 3rd and 6th graders). Teachers at the next level will provide a brief overview about expectations for your transition and to answer questions for the greater good of the group.

5:30pm – LibraryLower Elementary

5:30pm – Middle School Wing (7th and 8th grade)

6:15pm – LibraryUpper Elementary

Teachers who have been hired to join the staff will be here to meet you, too!

The Houston Museum of Natural Science will be at Garden Oaks in the cafeteria with the Discovery Dome for presentations, the Robotics lab and Science Labs will be open and Mad Science will be presenting in the Sunshine Garden Courtyard. Additionally, GT projects will be on display in the cafeteria. Join us for an exciting evening!

Summer Literacy

Recent research has confirmed what parents and educators have known for years – children lose important academic skills over the summer! Just like anything else that we do, practice makes better and when children don’t practice over the summer, academic skills become rusty. What can you do as a parent to help keep your child on the path of learning and academic mastery?

  1. Be sure your child is reading authentic literature daily. Read to your child every day (at ALL ages) and share the joy of reading. Go to the public library and check out books for free!
  2. Use technology resources such as iStation for reading and GoMath, Think Through Math and Khan Academy online. Your child(ren) have passwords for these so see your teacher for more details.

Montessori Moment – Valuing Diversity

Dr. Montessori was an advocate for peace and for ensuring that her methodology focused on valuing global citizens. Talk to your child about valuing others and appreciating differences. Child psychologists recommend talking to children about race as early as 3 yr old. Together we’re better!
