Questions and Answers| Mothers, Fathers and Babies Workforce Service Forecast

What is a Workforce Service Forecast?

A Workforce Service Forecast (WSF) indicates what the future health workforce in New Zealand should look like in order to ensure delivery of high quality healthcare services.

Why were the Workforce Service Forecasts commissioned?

The WSFs were commissioned to provide expert advice for considering how high quality health and disability services can be delivered effectively and efficiently for all New Zealand communities.

The purpose of the Mothers, Fathers and Babies WSF is to influence the development of future maternity and well-child workforce services.

Who wrote the Mother, Fathers and Babies Service Forecast?

An independent working group supported by Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) and chaired by Professor Peter Stone with membership from the nursing, medical midwifery and academic professions was established to undertake this WSF.

The WSF does not necessarily reflect the view of HWNZ or the Ministry of Health and is not intended to be representative of the views of all those engaged in the delivery of maternity services.

Who will benefit from the report?

HWNZ anticipates that maternity and well-child services’ users would benefit from the WSF.

Will there be doing a follow up report or an evaluation on the Mothers, Fathers and Babies Workforce Service Forecast?

HWNZ will consult with the key stakeholders identified in the report and members of the wider health sector, to determine which recommendations can be progressed and establish an action plan.

Who are the recommendations for?

The recommendations have primarily been developed for HWNZ, maternity and well-child service providers and other health services dedicated to improve the quality of services delivered to mothers, fathers and their babies.

Who will be following up the recommendations?

In conjunction with the Ministry of Health and in consultation with relevant stakeholders, HWNZ will identify the recommendations which can be progressed and establish an action plan for them to be implemented. Where possible, HWNZ aims to build on initiatives that have been completed or already planned.

What is being done to improve the data around the ‘longitude’ of life-course (page 25)?

HWNZ is working with the Medical, Nursing and Midwifery Council of New Zealand and the wider Ministry of Health to ensure all data related to maternity and well-child service workforces are valid and reliable.
