Morrow Elementary SAC Meeting Minutes

Date: November 18, 2016 at 7:30 A.M.

Members Present: Jean Vilus, Jo-AnnBrazle, Christine Campbell, Sharon Schwartz, Laurel Crowle, Rossana Guzman, MirielleImbert, Marcia Pasqualin.

  1. Welcome and Introduction
  2. Review of Minutes
  3. One grammatical adjustment to be made (10 d.)
  4. Motion: Mrs. Schwartz

  6. All persons present were in favor of minutes.
  7. Review of School Improvement Plan
  8. Making improvements
  9. Intervention and enrichment program
  10. Small groups are created for students.
  11. Groups created for students that are below grade level according to BASS Assessment analysis
  12. Parents are encouraged to ask questions of teachers in an effort to help students as much as possible with services that are available.
  13. School has many resources- Bilingual staff, Social Services, RTI, etc…
  14. Main focus is to strengthen RTI plan and improve and increase school hands-on projects
  15. SMART Future Updates
  16. SMART Bond
  17. Morrow Elementary School will be getting additional computers
  18. 3rd grade students will have their own devices
  19. K and 2nd grade will have a minimum of 3 computers and a rotating cart
  20. Opening opportunities for younger grades
  21. Extended hours for Computer Lab in the morning (7:30am)viaMs. Mason;we are looking to expand to the afternoon to give students an opportunity for self-improvement.
  22. Program for English Language Learners to assist parents and students whose first language is not English (letter will be sent home)
  23. We have several enrichment activities such as:
  24. Chorus
  25. Science Project
  26. Novel Studies
  27. (we are also working on differentiating instruction for students)
  28. Parents are welcomed to visit or volunteer. Parents may apply on line or visit the front office.
  29. Field Day on Monday- Volunteers welcomed and must be approved by Broward County
  30. Art program --- The art bus will be coming to Morrow Elementary to have students participate in art activities.
  31. Our 4th graders are working on creating a mural.
  32. Parents are encouraged to communicate ideas by phone, email, or other
  33. Science Fair—February-Save the Date Flyer will be sent to parents
  34. Ms. Pasqualin works with high achievers and gifted students
  35. We will be having ELO camps. Students will meet for intervention or enrichment during the 8-9am block.
  36. Example of enrichment: Writing club where students write the school newspaper
  37. Coding club will be coming up in December
  38. Allows children to explore coding skills
  39. Morrow Elementary ranked 10% in Math in state of Florida— Governor Rick Scott sent a letter to DrCrowle recognizing the achievement (parents were given letter for review at SAC meeting)

Parent: -- how can you volunteer? (Parent was directed to see Ms. Stacey in the Office for paperwork process)

  1. Option open to parents to have SAC at 7:30
  2. Current date for next SAC to stay as originally scheduled
  3. Parental Input in Decision Making (SIP, SAC, SAF)
  4. A+ Funds – More information will be forthcoming
  5. Money will be given to teachers and staff members
  6. SAC makes final decision
  7. Open for proposal for distribution of funds
  8. Before and after school Child Care
  9. JCC aftercare review was outstanding
  10. Option to bring to the attention to SAC other providers that are available for aftercare
  11. Recommendation: stay with current aftercare provider JCC
  12. Motion to continue with JCC: Mrs. Plummer
  13. 2nd by Ms. Eliott
  14. Vote: Unanimous

Parent: What is JCC? My daughter is a little behind. (Parent asked about afterschool care program)

* Ms. Schwartz (JCC director) and Dr. Crowle (Principal) addressed issue

Actions to be taken:

  • Speak with parent to clarify questions
  • Clarify what JCC is and its function
  • Explain RTI process

Parents were also informed of request forms available in the front office which they cancomplete to receive a call back concerning any concerns they may have

  1. Options for next year— proposals for first Day Wed. Aug 16 or Monday Aug 21st, last day Tuesday, June 6.
