Morrisville Community Garden Meeting Minutes: May 9, 2011

In attendance: Donna Willard, Anne Stockdell-Giesler, Karsten Baumann, Rob Smith, Laura Marsh, Scott Marsh, Jane Davison, Sara Schager, Don Edwards

Land:

219 Church Street may be the future location of the MCG. MCG discussion is item #10 on the agenda for 5/10/11 Morrisville Town Hall meeting. Donna will present. Karsten suggested we invite Tony Chiotakis & Mayor Holcombe to walk the proposed site. If applicable, it will be up to the Town of Morrisville to let the neighboring tenants know about the garden location. MCG plans to make introductions and invite and encourage the neighboring tenants to join the MCG. It was reported that Tony Chiotakis has asked for an “expedited decision” on the 219 Church Street plot, hopefully by the next Town Hall meeting on 5/25/11.

Treasury Report:

Jane gave the treasury report.

Materials collection:

Jane’s lumber contact has generously agreed to donate enough lumber for 9, 14’x3’ or 4’ raised beds. Jane also acquired lots of tools at an auction she recently attended. In addition, Donna acquired top soil & other soil amendments from Home Depot. Page Road Garden & American Soil & Mulch gave us quotes on materials to purchase. Anne picked up more plants from Grow & Share. Jane cited Logan Trading Company as a lead for possible donations. MCG still needs soaker hoses.

Legal:

No new updates.

Bank account:

MCG has to file Assumed Name Certificate with the county clerk before MCG can get a bank account.

Insurance:

Liability insurance quotes were received, and the quote from Jane’s insurance contact was the best. Jane generously offered to pay the cost of one year’s liability insurance up front (MCG will reimburse her). Scott asked Jane to confirm that the liability insurance provides 24/7 coverage.

Education:

Donna reported that Matt Oberst (Sterling Montessory) hopes to work with MCG. Matt has told Donna that a lot of people at Sterling have expressed an interest in the garden. Matt will confirm participation with the interested parties. Anne suggested we invite someone from the Ag Extension office to visit the MCG site & provide us with planning and planting tips. Anne also mentioned that the Grow & Share people are willing to give on-site educational talks. New member, Sara Schager, mentioned that her dad was an Ag Extension agent. She offered to look for Ag Extension agents who might be interested in talking to MCG. New member, Don Edwards, also offered to look for information, grant money, and people resources on the local foods list serv.

Ground breaking:

After a garden site becomes official, MCG wants to have a ground breaking. Hopefully sometime in early June.

Next MCG meeting:

Monday, May 16 @ 6:30pm @ 219 Church St, Morrisville, NC
