Looking Ahead

Hip, hip hooray! It’s almost the 100th day! We are officially ½ way through the year and making lots of exciting plans to finish this year strong and prepare for the years ahead. Here are a couple of the biggies:

Kindergarten: Please help spread the word: It is time to register for kindergarten! If you have neighbors or other community members that have incoming Mustangs, please share that we have started kindergarten registration. Although registration doesn't have a cutoff it is incredibly helpful to know how many new students we should anticipate and what the demand for full day kindergarten is. Our school will continue to be a blend of full day and half day for the 2016-17 school year. Please see the kindergarten link on the Moorlands webpage for additional information.

Art Installation: You may recall that PTA raised money last year for campus beautification. The big wall across from the main office is getting a face lift and is going to be covered with a bright, beautiful mural. The project is in process and will be pretty fantastic. Please save your plastic bottle caps and send them in for the months of February and March (look up bottle cap art and you will see the amazing things that can be done). Please look for unusual and bright colors as you are shopping. All sorts of durable plastic lids, so if in doubt send them in (clean please). This is a fun way to repurpose and a great opportunity to extend and support Moorlands Student Council’s goal to become a King County Green School.

Moorlands Park: I hope the rumors are starting, because this one is really exciting! Our neighborhood park is about to get a whole lot prettier (and more functional and updated). The city of Kenmore has received a grant for park improvements that will include all new playground equipment, a paved path, and lots of other wonderful improvements to Moorlands Park. The city will have an information meeting this spring with work to happen mid 2017.

Growing: Our neighborhood continues to grow and we anticipate welcoming even more students next school year. The really good news is we all fit on campus and plans are well underway to keep it that way. Lots of exciting things happening. Thanks for all of your support as we navigate improvements, growing pains, changes...

CAPS! CAPS! And More CAPS!

The PTA needs you to drink your milk! (and juice, and water and…) Why? We need about 30,000 recycled plastic lids for an exciting, one-of-a kind art mural coming soon to our school. So we are asking the Moorlands community to collect CLEAN plastic bottle caps for a mosaic mural made entirely out of….you guessed it- bottle caps! We need all sizes and colors, soft or hard plastic. So don’t throw away any Play Doh caps, seasoning and spice caps, milk caps, soda bottle caps, water bottle caps, peanuts lids, peanut butter lids or old Tupperware lids, you get the picture. Check your pantry and see what else you can find. And extra kudos for those who collect those coveted pink and purple lids. Tell your employer, share with the neighbors and call Grandma- we need their lids too!

It’s Back!!!... Time to get ready for the

2016 Moorlands PTA Science Extravaganza!

Wed. March 9th, from 4pm – 7pm

The Science Extravaganza will again be held mid-week.
This will allow us to take advantage of our early dismissal day, reducing PTA costs for the Extravaganza and allowing us to keep it an annual, free event for participants.

Flyers and registration forms will be handed out by teachers in late January.
For more information, visit the PTA website. Turn in your registration form by Wednesday, February 10th to give yourself the most time to prepare your boards.

It’s pretty easy…Do some science at home, Create a display, and Share your project!

Science is FUN, and EVERYONE can do science!

The most important thing to remember is to HAVE FUN!

You can do your project with a partner if you would like.

If you have any questions, please contact Joanne Chapple or Jay Swift at

Also, parents, please contact us if you would like to help with this event, as we need more volunteers!

What's happening in PE?

As we finish our jump rope unit, we will be moving onto our basketball unit. This unit will last 3 weeks.During this unit students will work on improving their basic basketball skills, which include dribbling (without looking at the ball), different types of passes (ask them what the 3 types are), and shooting. We will talk about how the game of basketball was created, so be sure to ask them! It's a fascinating story! We are continuing to run twice a month, working on improving their Cardio-Respiratory Endurance while adding miles to the school total. Check out Moorlands Miles on Mr. Sheaffer's website to see how many miles Moorlands has ran! It's amazing how far the mustangs have ran!

Moorlands Miles

As we wrapped up running for the month of January, the 3rd-6th grade have ran a total of 1,974 Miles! To put that into perspective that’s running from Seattle to Detroit, Michigan or running from Seattle to Unalaska, Alaska. Take out a map and show them just how far the mustangs have ran! Students are doing a fabulous job running, setting personal records every time they run! We should make it across the United States by the end of the year and into another country! Keep up to date on how the mustangs are doing by visiting Mr. Sheaffer's website and click on Moorlands Miles. There you will find how many miles the mustangs have ran and which cities they have ran too from Seattle.
