Mrs. Husband’s For Your Consideration- What Matters @ Monty

I have had a wonderful first week at Montgomery getting to know students and staff. Throughout the week I have been visiting classes to give students a chance to get to know me and to tell me about Montgomery Middle and what traditions, programsand activities matter most to them.

Students wanted to be sure that events/ traditions that matter to them will continue to be an important part of the culture of Monty. Not surprisingly students wanted to preserve anything connected to food; Birthday club, Multicultural Lunch and PAC hot lunches topped the most frequently mentioned items. Sports and after school activities including ski and snowboard, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track and field and intramurals also ranked highly in all classes.

Smaller traditions such as High Five Fridays and Monty’s two most unique traditions, The Dog Show and Hoe Down were also viewed as very significant to our students. The annual traditions of giving to others through Me to We, Project Angel and the Christmas Market was shared many times. Small groups such as Challenge and the Girl’s and Boy’s Group that meet weekly as well as the school wide community circle was an important option for students. Monty students also love the offerings in the Explorations part of their day (Expo).

Two weeks ago I was fortunate to be able to enjoy one of the Expo offerings, the Beginning and Advanced Bands’ first evening performance of the school year. Under the excellent leadership of Mr. Shan we heard and watched nearly 70 students perform for a full house of parents and admirers. The “performance” was outstanding both in terms of students’ musicality andstudent decorum. What was so evident in our band concert is evident throughout Monty. Throughout Monty’s many traditions I see students’ strong connection to their teachers and teachers’ keen interest in your children and their development and well-being. This is the heart of the culture of Monty, a deep caring for kids. What matters most to students is made possible thanks to the staff’s tremendous dedication to students and the community of parents that support those efforts. I feel very fortunate indeed to be part of such a caring place to work and learn.

School News

Multicultural/ CommunityLunch

On Friday, February 16th we will be hosting our annual environmentally friendly multicultural/ community lunch. This year with the input of teachers and a student committee we are focusing on building community. This is a chance for students to connect with their family heritage (or one part of it). We have included a link to a video produced by President’s Choice that focuses on the positives of sharing a meal with others. Social isolation is one of the biggest health concerns of this decade. It has more impact than smoking or being overweight on our long term health. Eating together is one way to connect. Click hereto access the link, thanks to Mrs. McLean for locating the link.

Sign up forms were sent home on Friday and emailed to parents. The advisory that has the highest percentage of returned forms will be selected to eat first at the Multicultural Lunch.

All families are asked to participate in the lunch by either;

  • Sending food to share on Feb 16thOR
  • Making an online donation ($10 recommended) so that the school can purchase food to share with all students.
  • All students needs to bring reusable cutlery, a plate and cup in a bag to carry to/from school.

Grade 8 Transition to Secondary School

Course selection forms February 5th

Course selection forms are due to Mrs. Diep. These forms determine the elective courses that the grade 8 students will be placed in next year. Courses changes have been severely restricted in part due to new rules around class size and composition. It is very important that all grade 8 get these forms in now as Secondary Schools begin to build their timetables for next September. Students who do not return a form will be placed in an available elective which may or may not be a good fit for your child.

Cross Boundary Applications

Gr. 8 students received a letter letting you know which secondary school your child will be going to, based on the address information we have on record. Cross boundary applications start on Feb 8th at 9am and close on Feb 15th at 4pm.If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our counsellor, Mrs. Diep at:

  • Rather work with a partner or in partnership with others to better improve their skills
  • Rather use their time waiting for rides and pick up in a more productive manner
  • Like to use the school computers to complete and print work on their own time
